p.1
This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:
The childminder has failed to maintain an appropriate paediatric first-aid qualification. The childminder's self-evaluation does not focus incisively enough on the quality of her provision, to accurately identify targets for improvement. The childminder does not always successfully promote two-way information sharing between herself and parents, to enable consistent strategies to be used to promote children's development.
p.1
It has the following strengths
The childminder fosters loving and caring relationships with each child, respecting their individual routines and preferences. She promotes their self-esteem well. Children seek the childminder out to join in their play. She interacts appropriately, role modelling vocabulary and using questions to enhance children's experiences. The childminder supports children's behaviour well. She is calm and consistent, using age-appropriate strategies to encourage children to interact kindly with one another. The childminder knows each child well. She values their interests when planning activities. Children respond well to planned activities, eagerly helping to clear a space for the childminder to set up the activity. Parents report they are happy with the provision and their children's progress during their time at the childminder's home. The childminder provides some opportunities for children to learn about the world

around them. Children socialise with others at local playgroups and the childminder plans activities to build on their understanding of other cultures.

Inspection activities
The inspector toured the areas used for childminding. The inspector reviewed written feedback submitted by parents and took this into account. The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities in the indoor area and assessed the impact this has on children's learning. The inspector completed a joint observation with the childminder. The inspector spoke with the childminder and children at appropriate times during the inspection. She reviewed relevant documentation, including policies and procedures, learning records and evidence of the childminder's suitability.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management requires improvement
The childminder's self-evaluation does not focus sharply enough on how the quality of teaching can be improved or ensuring that all of the requirements are consistently met. The childminder has not maintained a paediatric first-aid qualification. However, she seeks the opinions of parents and is open to adapting her practice based on their suggestions. The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder has a sufficient understanding of child protection issues and how to report her concerns to help keep children safe. She ensures that the environment is safe by conducting risk assessments to appropriately minimise hazards. Children show a developing understanding of how to use toys and equipment safely, as well as the childminder's emergency evacuation procedure.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement
The childminder finds out some information from parents about children's interests and preferences when they first begin attending. However, ongoing information sharing with parents is not always effective. This does not enable the childminder to apply a consistent approach to support children's development. The childminder encourages children to compare quantity, size and shape as they explore a basket of materials containing boxes, bangles and jugs. Children explore cause and effect as they post balls through openings and watch them roll down a tube. The childminder is experienced and demonstrates a sound understanding of how children learn and develop. She is able to identify gaps in children's learning and seek support for them, if required. The required progress check for children aged between two and three years is completed and the information is shared with parents. Children's development is appropriately supported across all areas of
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement
The childminder has failed to maintain a valid paediatric first-aid qualification. Although this is a breach of requirements, in this case the impact is reduced as a result of previous training. The childminder demonstrates a sufficient knowledge of how to administer treatment to children in the event of an emergency. Children behave appropriately for their age. They play alongside each other well, as the childminder supports their developing understanding of taking turns and sharing consistently. The childminder is a good role model for children. She is patient and caring. Children show they have good relationships with her. They spontaneously declare they love her as they play. The childminder consistently follows hygiene routines, making children aware of what she is doing, for example, as she wipes their noses. Children are encouraged to develop healthy practices. They enjoy dancing, with or without music, as the childminder claps and praises

them. Her use of praise promotes children's confidence and self-esteem.
p.3
Outcomes for children require improvement
The childminder helps children to develop the basic skills they require to prepare them for their future learning. She helps them to learn to do things for themselves, such as taking off their shoes or cleaning their hands. The childminder promotes children's social skills appropriately.
