This provision is good
Partnerships with parents and the local authority adviser are good. Positive feedback from parents demonstrates their high regard for the childminder and the service she offers. The childminder regularly seeks parents' views. She identifies accurate targets that drive forward ongoing improvements that offer all children challenge and support. Observation and assessment are rigorous. The childminder uses the information gained to plan learning experiences that are tailored to each child's needs and interests. This helps to ensure their progress is fully promoted. Children enjoy playing with a range of exciting toys and materials. Activities are based on children's interests and the well-organised environment supports their play and learning. This means children explore freely, use their imagination and make good progress. Children enjoy close relationships with the childminder and they feel settled and secure.
p.1
It is not yet outstanding because:
The childminder does not always give younger children enough time to think and respond to her questions and comments. The childminder does not provide enough opportunities for children to gain a wider awareness of other people's customs, faiths or beliefs.

p.2
Inspection activities
The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and assessed the impact this has on children's learning. The inspector held discussions with the childminder and jointly reviewed an activity with her. The inspector looked at children's assessment records and the planning documentation. The inspector checked evidence of the suitability and training of the childminder and her self-evaluation and improvement plan. The inspector took account of the views of children spoken to on the day and from information included in the setting's own parent survey.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder has attended child protection training and is alert to any issues for concern in the child's life at home or elsewhere. She is aware of the procedure she must follow if she has any concerns that a child is suffering from abuse. The childminder has a range of effective procedures and policies which supports children's health, safety and well-being. Risk assessments are thoroughly conducted to help keep children safe. The childminder is committed to her continuous professional development. She attends a wide range of training opportunities. This helps to keep her practice up to date and provides new ideas that promote good outcomes for children.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder's qualification has given her a good understanding of how children learn and develop. She checks that the activities provided support children to strengthen and deepen their skills in all of the relevant areas of learning. Children have good opportunities to develop their physical and imaginary play skills. They enjoy playing in the home-made boat made out of a large cardboard box, which they helped to paint. The physical skills needed for writing and drawing are refined as children roll, poke and shape their malleable dough creations. During such activities, the childminder promotes children's communication and language skills as she uses talk to describe their actions. She enhances this activity further by encouraging children to name and recognise shapes and colours and to count. Children are engrossed in their play for extended periods of time.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
The childminder has recently completed training on promoting children's positive behaviour. She uses effective strategies and positive role modelling to promote good behaviour. Children's behaviour is good and their actions show they are aware of the setting's rules and behaviour boundaries. For example, they know that they are expected to take turns and share. Children are encouraged to use appropriate manners, such as please and thank you. The childminder talks to children and describes what they are doing as they wash and dry their hands. Meals and snacks provided for the children are nutritious and balanced. The childminder takes the children on regular outings. They walk along the canal to feed the ducks and visit indoor soft-play establishments. This gives them opportunities to learn to take manageable risks and experience physical challenge in their play. These outings, along with trips to the local childminding group, help children to

develop confidence, independence and social skills outside of the childminder's home.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
All children make good progress. They are learning to be independent, for example, by regularly helping to tidy up throughout the day. Older children are well prepared to take their first steps into school. Their literacy skills are developing well. Children have daily opportunities to recognise words, such as the days of the week and their own names.
