This provision is good

 The manager and staff have extremely positive relationships with parents and the host school. This helps to promote a joint approach for sharing information relevant to each child's individual needs, likes, dislikes and interests. Staff use shared information to help them plan an inviting environment with activities that appeal to each child.  Children have lots of fun at the club. They are enthusiastic and animated as they arrive and talk about their day at school. They explore their play surroundings eagerly, enjoying the wide range of activities on offer. Staff observe children in their play, and support them well to develop their skills and broaden their interests.  Recruitment and vetting procedures are robust. The manager ensures that all staff working with children are suitable and safe to do so.  Children's behaviour is very good. They are familiar with the routines and behavioural expectations of the club and cooperate well with staff and each other.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 Staff do not consistently promote opportunities to challenge all children to extend their thinking skills.  The supervision of staff is not always focused on enhancing the quality of interactions and children's care to an outstanding level.  Staff's evaluation of the provision does not fully plan for, or gauge the success of, improvements to the practice and provision.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 extend opportunities to challenge children's thinking skills and allow them more time to consider their responses and to extend their ideas  build on the existing systems for the supervision of staff to ensure that targets raised for staff are precisely focused and lead to an astute programme of professional development to further improve their already good skills  enhance the process of self-evaluation and review the impact of planned changes and how this improves outcomes for children.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector had a tour of the club and discussed how the club operates.  The inspector accompanied staff on the collection of children from school.  The inspector spoke with staff, parents and children during the inspection and observed children at play.  The inspector conducted a joint observation with the club manager.  The inspector looked at a sample of children's records, risk assessments, and discussed a range of policies, including safeguarding, complaints and behaviour management procedures.  The inspector checked evidence of the suitability and qualifications of staff working with children.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. Staff recognise the possible signs, symptoms and indicators of abuse and neglect. They understand the referral procedure well and know what action to take should they become concerned about the professional conduct of a colleague. Risk assessments identify how hazards are minimised to help ensure that children's safety is maintained at all times. This includes staff walking children to and from other local schools. Visitor's identity is checked before entry. The security of the premises is given a high priority. The manager and staff pay good attention to continuing their professional development. Up-to-date safeguarding, food hygiene and first-aid training help them to provide appropriate care for children. In addition, the well- qualified team seeks further relevant playwork training, which is over and above that required by current legislation. This helps staff to remain aware of appropriate ways in

which to support and extend fun, interactive play opportunities for children. The manager and staff work extremely closely with the host primary school. Some of the staff also work within the school. These relationships are used to advantage when sharing relevant information to help children move confidently between the school and the club. Relationships with parents are successful. Parents comment on how children are excited to come to the club and speak highly of staff and the activities provided.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The well-qualified staff team has an extensive knowledge and understanding of child development and playwork. They make meaningful observations, complement learning from school and plan activities based on children's interests. For example, while exploring a book project in school, children arrive at the club dressed as characters from their favourite book. They access resources and have fun, creating elaborate bookmarks, reading stories and writing short book-reviews. Staff understand the differing needs of the ages of children attending. They plan well so that every child is offered a variety of opportunities. Staff are skilled at facilitating good play experiences that capture children's interests. They interact positively and encourage children to become involved in a wide range of activities. Children gain an understanding of different cultures and faiths as they talk about and explore different festivals.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children settle very well and the key-person system is highly effective. Children enjoy their time at the club and are eager to inform the inspector of their favourite activities and games that they like to play with. They discuss forthcoming events with each other and excitedly talk about events linked to Mother's Day. Staff place high emphasis on promoting children's independence, concentration and self-care skills. Children develop an early understanding of how to keep themselves safe during their play. They discuss the importance of road safety. Staff are deployed effectively and are suitably trained in first aid. They have a thorough knowledge and understanding of how to respond and deal with a number of medical emergencies. Staff promote children's good health very well. They discuss the importance of healthy living and provide lots of opportunities for children to be physically active.
