This provision is good

 The childminder has a positive attitude towards her work. She attends many relevant courses to improve her knowledge and uses the information gained to provide new and exciting learning experiences.  The childminder provides a wide range of opportunities for the children. These include visits to parks and groups to socialise with other children.  Children have a wealth of interesting activities and resources to choose from. Children are challenged, motivated to learn and make good progress.  The childminder provides good support for children and their parents when moving on to school. Children are well prepared for the next stages of learning.  The relationships between children and the childminder are positive. Children form secure attachments and are confident and ready to learn.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not take all opportunities to develop children's awareness of shapes to build on their mathematical knowledge.  The childminder's monitoring system is not consistently used to its full potential to monitor children's development as accurately as possible.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 provide more opportunities for children to learn about shapes, to build on their mathematical knowledge  strengthen further the good monitoring process to identify children's achievements even more precisely to be able to plan to help them make the best possible progress.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector spoke to the childminder at appropriate times throughout the inspection.  The inspector engaged with the children during the inspection.  The inspector undertook a joint observation with the childminder.  The inspector observed the children during their indoor play activities, as well as their snack routine.  The inspector sampled various documents, including children's learning records, the childminder's self-evaluation form, risk assessments and a selection of policies and procedures.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a good understanding of how to keep children safe and the procedure to follow should she have any concerns. The childminder has extremely positive partnerships with parents. She works very closely with them. She offers extra support when needed and keeps them involved and up to date with their children's learning and development. The childminder regularly reflects on her practice, taking into account the views of parents and the needs and interests of children. For example, she provides role play resources to help children to prepare for the arrival of a new baby. The childminder has good partnerships with other settings children attend and shares information to support children's successful moves between these settings.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The environment is warm, welcoming and stimulating. Children actively explore and independently engage in a range of activities. The childminder has a good understanding of how children learn and plans a broad range of interesting activities based around their interests. The childminder adapts these skilfully for each child's age and stage of learning. For example, for younger children whose speech is still developing, she spends longer repeating key words, giving them time to respond and repeat the words. The childminder follows children's lead and extends their learning well during play. For example, she asks questions to extend and develop their learning. The childminder makes individually tailored resources to reflect children's needs and interests. Children have the opportunity to take these resources home to explore them with their parents, helping to promote continuity in their learning.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder develops warm and supportive relationships with the children and their parents. She acts as a positive role model and promotes children's sense of achievement and confidence. For example, when children have completed their art work, they independently put it on the door, ready to show their parents. Children are very well behaved. They are kind, considerate and respectful of each other. They enjoy helping to complete simple tasks, such as tidying up and setting the table. The childminder risk assesses all areas of her provision to ensure that the children's safety is consistently maintained. She talks to the children regularly about safety issues, such as road safety, and gives gentle reminders in her home.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

All children make good progress. They are happy and confident during play, for example, as they sing, make animals noises and giggle as they hide from a 'crocodile'. Children gain the skills needed for their next steps in learning.
