This provision is good

 The childminder assesses children's needs and progress well. She uses her understanding of their individual stages of development to plan a wide range of activities. Children make good progress and are ready for the next stage in their learning.  Children are happy and settle quickly with the childminder. They behave well and respond very positively to the childminder's affectionate and caring manner.  The childminder takes effective steps to keep children safe. For example, she teaches children how to cross the road and the importance of holding her hand when out walking.  Parents are very happy with the care the childminder provides for their children. She maintains good relationships with them and gathers a wide range of information about what their children know and can do when they start.  The childminder has a positive attitude towards training and attends a wide range of courses to keep her knowledge of current childcare practice up to date.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 Children are not always able to lead their own play and access the wide range of resources independently.  The childminder does not make full use of her good partnerships with parents to encourage them to contribute their thoughts to support the self-evaluation process.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 strengthen opportunities for children to lead their own play independently  build on the already good partnerships with parents to encourage them to contribute their views and suggestions, to develop the self-evaluation process further.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed children in the setting and during a walk.  The inspector spoke to the childminder at appropriate times during the inspection.  The inspector sampled a range of paperwork, including children's records, a range of policies and other documents.  The inspector toured areas of the premises used for childminding.  The inspector spoke to parents and looked at the record of parental views collected by the childminder.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The childminder attends training to keep her safeguarding knowledge up to date. Safeguarding is effective. She monitors children's attendance and has a good understanding of how to report any concerns. The childminder reflects on her practice to identify aspects of her provision to develop further. For example, she introduced low-level mirrors to help children develop their awareness of personal-hygiene routines. The childminder has links with other early years settings and understands the importance of sharing information with them when a child in her care attends an additional setting.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder uses observations and assessments effectively to monitor the progress children make. She talks to children in a way that stimulates their curiosity and develops their knowledge and understanding well. The childminder makes good use of all opportunities that arise to develop children's learning. For example, during an extended walk, she talked to the children about what they were seeing around them. Children discussed the colour and size of the dogs they saw and commented that the grass was 'pointy' and not frozen anymore. Children explore activities purposefully. For example, they confidently use tweezers to pick up coloured blocks. The childminder provides clear guidance to help them hold the tweezers more effectively to pick up the blocks easily. Children discuss the different colours and use simple mathematical language to describe where they intend to place their block.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder listens to children carefully and responds quickly to their emotional and physical needs. Children behave well and follow the childminder's instructions. She encourages them to share, take turns and respect each other's feelings and ideas. For example, when out on their walk, the children took turns to talk about what they were seeing and answer the childminder's questions. The childminder helps children to develop skills they need for the next stage in their learning. For example, she encourages children to take off their own coats and shoes, and wash their hands before eating.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are confident, independent and highly motivated. They are inquisitive about the world around them and have good communication and language skills. Children learn about simple mathematical concepts, such as positional language, and develop their physical skills through play. Children make good progress from their starting points and are ready for the next stage of their learning.
