This provision is good
The childminder has a good understanding of child development. She plans activities that are interesting and entice children to explore and investigate in their play. The childminder effectively uses her observations and assessments of children effectively to monitor their achievements. Children make good progress. Partnerships with parents are good. The childminder regularly exchanges information with them about children's achievements and encourages them to share what they like at home. This helps to promote a consistent approach to learning. There are strong emotional relationships between the childminder and the children. Children thoroughly enjoy the time they spend with her. The childminder makes good use of the facilities in the local community, such as childminding groups and the library, to extend children's learning. This is one way that helps children learn to build relationships with others and develop their social skills.
p.1
It is not yet outstanding because:
At times, the childminder misses opportunities to extend children's experiences of different materials to further develop their understanding and curiosity. The childminder, occasionally, misses opportunities to support children's continual choice of play to fully extend their learning and help them follow their own ideas.
p.1
What the setting needs to do to improve further
To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:
p.2
What the setting needs to do to improve further
provide more opportunities for children to explore different materials to further develop their imagination and creativity make more use of opportunities for children to explore their independent choices and ideas in play without interruption.
p.2
Inspection activities
The inspector observed the childminder and children taking part in activities. The inspector held discussions with the childminder. The inspector took account of the parents' views. The inspector checked evidence of suitability of the childminder and adults living on the premises. The inspector sampled relevant documentation, including policies and procedures and discussed the childminder's self-evaluation.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder understands how to recognise and manage any concerns that may arise about children's welfare, including the procedures to follow. The childminder is proactive in the way she supports children to learn about their own safety and takes effective action to minimise any hazards. This helps her to care for children in a safe and secure environment. She keeps her skills and knowledge updated, such as through completing training and sharing ideas for good practice with other childminders and professionals. Parents value the way that information is successfully shared and comment on how happy their children are in the childminder's care. She is reflective and evaluates her practice to improve learning outcomes for all children.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder has a good understanding of the different abilities and interests of the children. For example, she provides relevant resources to extend children's emerging interest in music and rhythm. Children enjoy identifying shapes as they place them into the correct slot in the shape sorter. The childminder skilfully weaves in opportunities during children's play to promote their early mathematical skills. For example, she models counting and encourages children to count and say what number comes next. Children have opportunities to listen to stories and enjoy joining in with repeated phrases. This is one way that the childminder helps to promote children's early literacy and their enjoyment of books.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
The childminder provides a welcoming, homely environment where children settle quickly. She gathers useful information from parents from the start to help her to meet their children's individual needs. Children are happy and settled. The childminder has a kind and caring personality and children build strong relationships with her. Children behave well. The childminder teaches young children to share and take turns. She praises children on their achievements, helping them to feel confident and raises their self-esteem. The childminder helps children to develop a healthy lifestyle. For example, amongst other activities, the childminder offers plenty of opportunities for them to spend time in the fresh air and exercise. She also helps children to learn about the importance of good personal hygiene routines, discussing with them the need to wash their hands.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children make good progress from their starting points. Children develop a good foundation to support their future learning. They are prepared well for the move on to school or nursery.
