Effectiveness of the leadership and management Requires improvement Quality of teaching, learning and assessment Requires improvement Personal development, behaviour and welfare Requires improvement Outcomes for children Requires improvement
p.1
This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:
The quality of teaching is variable. Children are not offered highly challenging activities to extend and promote their learning and development. The childminder does not always give parents ideas on how to best support their children's learning and development at home. Self-evaluation is not rigorous enough to identify and address all weaknesses in practice or to maintain continuous improvement in the provision. The childminder does not always gain as much information as possible from parents about children's learning when they first start attending, in order to inform more focused initial planning.
p.1
It has the following strengths
The childminder supports children's mathematical development. Children enjoy counting the number of bricks in towers they have built. They learn about size as they measure the towers and identify if they are taller or shorter than themselves. Children receive good opportunities for exercise. They enjoy regular exploring on their visits to the woods, and test out their physical skills and confidence on larger equipment in the local park. The childminder effectively supports children's speech and language development. With help, children are able to find a piece of a puzzle that displays the first letter of their name. They learn the sounds of letters they recognise.

What the setting needs to do to improve further
To meet the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage and the Childcare Register the provider must:

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:
p.2
Due Date
give parents more guidance and ideas to help them in supporting and extending their children's learning at home develop procedures for self-evaluation to ensure targets for improvement are based on rigorous monitoring of practice and include the views of parents and children.
p.2
Inspection activities
The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and outdoors and assessed the impact this has on children's learning. The inspector observed and discussed a planned activity with the childminder. The inspector spoke with the childminder at appropriate times during the inspection. The inspector looked at relevant documentation, such as the childminder's self- evaluation, children's learning records and a sample of policies. The inspector read feedback from parents. She talked to children during the inspection and took account of their views and responses. The inspector checked evidence of the suitability of the childminder and all adults living at the premises.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management requires improvement
The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder is aware of the procedures to follow if there is a concern regarding the safety or welfare of a child. The childminder does not seek the views of parents and children when reflecting on and evaluating her practice. She is not prioritising and addressing weaknesses effectively. The childminder's teaching is variable. Although she has a basic awareness of how children learn and develop, she does not consistently provide more opportunities for exciting and challenging activities that capture children's interest. Training is not consistently focused on improving her teaching skills.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement
Planned activities do not always capture children's interests and, at times, do not challenge children to further develop their learning. When children first attend the childminder's setting, their starting points are not discussed with parents. The childminder does not provide parents with ideas that will enable them to further support their child's learning at home. She does not clearly identify if a child is working within the typical age range of development. The children have access to a range of learning opportunities. However, they are often easily distracted because activities do not always capture their interest. The childminder is supporting the children to learn basic sign language as she is aware that this may be beneficial for children who have a communication and language delay.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement
Children are given opportunities to develop their independence. The childminder promotes their self-esteem through her praise and encouragement. Children learn about healthy choices at snack and mealtimes. They learn to respect each other's differences through a range of activities, books and discussions about different festivals, religions and cultures. The childminder supports children's learning by encouraging them to treat one another with consideration and respect. She is starting to support children to understand the differences between right and wrong. Children feel safe and secure with the childminder and parents report they are happy with the care she provides. Children do not stay focused on some activities as the learning opportunities do not capture their interest.
p.3
Outcomes for children require improvement
Some children are working comfortably within the range of development typical for their age. However, children's starting points are not accurately assessed. This means not all children are supported to be ready for the next stage of learning. They are not supported to achieve the best progress they can, as learning opportunities do not always capture their interest and are not challenging enough.
