They develop friendships and have good opportunities to socialise. Children play well and enjoy their activities, which reflect their positive attitude to learning.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 Although the childminder has good relationships with parents, she does not always seek their views when she reflects on her practice to help identify areas for improvement.  The childminder has not yet made the most of opportunities to enhance her already good knowledge of child development to the highest level.

p.1

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed children engaged in activities and the childminder's interaction with them.  The inspector sampled a range of documents, including policies and the children's files.  The inspector viewed the areas of the house that children use, and the toys and resources available.  The inspector spoke with the childminder and children at convenient times, and discussed the childminder's self-evaluation.  The inspector took into account the written views of parents.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder implements effective risk assessments, policies and procedures to ensure the safety of the children in her care. She has a good understanding of how to recognise concerns about a child, and is confident about the procedures to follow. The childminder organises activities so that all children can participate and make the best possible progress. Children benefit from the good relationships the childminder forms with parents. Parents comment on the good-quality experiences their children receive in the care of the childminder. She reflects on her own practice to identify areas for improvement; for example, finding courses to improve her teaching.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder provides children with a good range of activities to promote their learning and development in all areas. They maintain interest during play and show enthusiasm for learning. The childminder provides children with good opportunities to develop their language skills and build on their imagination, for example, by engaging in role-play games, such as shop keepers and babies. Children re-enact scenes from their own experiences and demonstrate a good understanding of different roles and responsibilities. The childminder encourages children's understanding of literacy and writing. For example, she helps children to recognise their own names and to make marks using a range of different tools. She promotes children's sense of belonging and helps them to feel valued, for example, by displaying their artwork on the walls.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder provides a warm and welcoming environment for children, who demonstrate they feel safe and secure in her care. The childminder supports children to develop their independence. Children learn to understand and respect differences and similarities in themselves and others, for example, by talking about their self-portraits they have made. The childminder takes effective steps to promote children's health, safety and well-being. For example, she provides children with healthy meals and snacks, and ensures they have time outdoors daily.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress in relation to their starting points. They enjoy their time with the childminder and are learning to become independent and confident learners. They learn to put on their own coats and shoes and to help tidy toys away before starting other activities. They are quickly gaining the necessary skills for their move to school or pre- school.
