This provision is good

 Children feel safe and emotionally well-supported. They form strong bonds with the caring childminder whose positive interactions reassure and comfort them.  The childminder uses her detailed observations effectively to plan a broad and balanced range of experiences. She makes good use of her assessments of children's progress and effectively meets children's individual learning needs. Children make good progress in readiness for their move to school.  The childminder works in close partnerships with parents and professionals to maintain a continuous approach to children's care, learning and development.  The childminder has a good understanding of safeguarding practice. She attends regular training and is clear on the procedure to follow should she have a child protection concern to keep children safe from harm.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 On occasion, the childminder misses opportunities to develop children's understanding of hygienic and safe practices further.  The childminder does not always encourage children to understand their feelings and learn how their behaviour affects others, to help them improve their social skills further.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 build on children's learning opportunities during routine activities to help them develop their understanding of hygienic and safety practices further  make better use of opportunities to help children understand their feelings and how their actions affect others.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed activities and the quality of teaching inside.  The inspector sampled a range of documentation, including children's assessment records, the childminder's self-evaluation and her policies and procedures.  The inspector spoke with the childminder at convenient times during the inspection.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder is vigilant and maintains a safe and secure environment for children to play. The childminder uses robust evaluation of her practice and provision and identifies areas to develop, which is a great improvement since the last inspection. For example, she has recently improved how she shares information with parents to involve them more in their children's learning. The childminder monitors children's progress well, taking appropriate steps to close gaps in learning effectively. Parents provide the childminder with key information about children's starting points and their ongoing learning at home, to help inform the planning process.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder uses her experience and training effectively to engage in children's play. She develops children's communication and language skills well in preparation for their next steps in learning. For example, she questions children effectively in their role play, developing their play and adding specific vocabulary to build their communication and language skills successfully. Children are interested in stories; confidently fill in missing rhyming words and say repetitive phrases. Children develop good mathematical skills. They count the passengers on the toy plane and the childminder helps them to divide them equally, effectively introducing children to early calculation. Children enjoy being physically active, especially in action songs. They are encouraged to take turns to choose a different animal and move in different ways, such as 'stomping like elephants'. They demonstrate high confidence as they sing songs on their own to the childminder.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder provides a wealth of resources in a homely and welcoming environment, where children are able to make independent choices. Children behave well, overall. They understand the childminder's expectations and use sign language effectively to support their choices; for example, a 'thumbs up' to show that they are willing to share the play food. Overall, the childminder supports children well to gain an understanding of good hygiene, healthy eating and keeping themselves safe. Children learn good skills to help meet some of their care needs; for example, being aware of their own toileting needs and helping when they have their nappy changed.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress from their starting points. They are becoming independent and gaining confidence in their abilities, which prepares them well for their next stage in learning and eventual move to school.
