The childminder is very proactive. She works effectively in partnership with others to support children's development and progress. The childminder completes thorough observations and assessments of children's learning. She uses information gathered from her own observations, in conjunction with that from parents or other providers, to plan interesting activities which appeal to children's interests. Children have close and caring relationships with the childminder. She fosters their early social skills in a variety of ways. This helps children to learn the rules of her setting and how to interact kindly with others. The childminder promotes children's independence well. Children are encouraged to make decisions about what they would like to do, eat or play with. The childminder fosters their self-confidence and self-esteem effectively. childminding network to share ideas for practice with other childminders.
p.1
It is not yet outstanding because:
The childminder undertakes self-evaluation to assess the impact of her practice. She does not make best use of the information from this to analyse and focus more sharply on enhancing the quality of teaching and learning. The childminder does not always maximise the opportunities for children who prefer to learn outdoors to explore resources which enhance their spontaneous play.

The inspector toured the premises. The inspector looked at relevant documentation, such as the childminder's self- evaluation and evidence of her suitability and qualifications. The inspector reviewed written feedback submitted by parents. The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and outdoors and assessed the impact this has on children's learning. The inspector completed a joint observation with the childminder.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder has a clear understanding of the correct local reporting procedures to follow, should she have concerns regarding a child's welfare. The childminder has devised a robust set of policies to underpin her practice. She regularly conducts risk assessments to manage and minimise potential risks in her home and on local outings. The childminder is very proactive in liaising with other agencies. She maintains good working relationships with parents, other providers and professionals. Her regular information sharing practices enable her to adapt her approach to ensure consistency for each child. The childminder is well organised and the documentation supporting her practice is well maintained. She seeks support through her local childminding network to enhance her understanding of legislative changes.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The quality of the childminder's teaching is good. Children show they are developing good levels of concentration, relative to their individual stages of development. The childminder makes very good use of information gathered from parents to extend children's learning at her setting. She helps parents to continue children's learning at home. The childminder's assessments are accurate and she has devised robust systems to monitor children's achievements. Children enjoy making marks in a variety of ways. They draw long, straight lines with three chalks held together and then watch with interest at the effect a brush and water can have on the chalkboard. The childminder models language very well, explaining to children what is happening or helping them to find the words for a new toy or experience.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
The childminder encourages children to take small, managed risks under her supervision. She enables them to develop the physical coordination and understanding to keep themselves safe when using equipment and playing in the outdoor area. Children respond well to the childminder, as she is a calm and positive role model. She is skilled in distracting children to reduce unwanted behaviours and supports their self-esteem by using lots of praise. The childminder gathers detailed information about children's medical needs, individual preferences and routines when they first begin attending. This enables her to shape her practice to suit each individual child. She builds caring relationships with children. They happily seek her out to join in as they play games with counters or for comfort when they are tired. The childminder has created an inviting environment in the indoor area. Children freely choose from resources which are displayed within their reach
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
All children are making expected progress from their individual starting points. Children enjoy playing and learning and show they are developing the key skills which will prepare them for the eventual move to school. They are confident, independent and able to understand rules.
