children and young people since the most recent full inspection

This home was judged Good at the full inspection. At this interim inspection Ofsted judge that it has sustained effectiveness .

p.2

children and young people since the most recent full inspection

Since the last inspection, one young person has left the home to semi-independent accommodation. As a result of this discharge one young person has been admitted into the placement. Young people said they feel safe. Young people are clearly at ease with staff and appear settled in their home. They said they knew how to make a complaint if they are unhappy about something. Young people benefit from an experienced consistent staff team that are qualified to meet their needs. They live in a safe, secure and caring environment where regular consultation between staff and young people takes place. Young people enjoy good health because their health needs are effectively identified and services are provided to meet them. They are encouraged and supported to attend routine appointments with dentists, doctors and opticians. Appropriate arrangements are in place for the safe management of medicines to promote the safety and well-being of young people.

p.2

children and young people since the most recent full inspection

All young people attend the organisation’s school. Education is highly valued in the home and care staff ensure young people are fully supported to attend and achieve. Since the home’s last inspection there have been no physical interventions and there have been a reduced number of reports of young people missing from care. This is a consequence of positive interventions at an early stage and recognising and rewarding positive behaviour, however young people are not receiving independent return interviews, and this means that their views are not being captured after a missing from care episode. Young people are supported by the staff team in maintaining contact with their families. The staff assist with transport and where required the supervision of contact. Family and friends are welcome at the home. The staff regard it as key that young people maintain meaningful relationships with those important to them

as this is part of their individual identity. Young people enjoy living in a home which provides a safe and secure environment. Staff complete regular health and safety checks and follow a range of safety procedure to protect young people from potential hazards. This includes fire drills, to ensure young people know what to do in case of an emergency. The system for the recruitment and selection of staff is thorough and ensures young people are only looked after by staff that are appropriately checked in order to work in the home. The home continues to be managed by a suitably qualified manager who has been in post since July 2014. The home has clearly defined policies for the supervision of staff, and a comprehensive induction programme designed to ensure all staff have the skills and qualities necessary for effective childcare practice. The homes bullying policy requires reviewing and updating so it is a current document.

p.2

children and young people since the most recent full inspection

In response to the recommendations made at the last inspection, there is now a clearer system for the capturing of specific information after an incident, the requirement requesting that the bullying policy be updated has not been met and therefore repeated.

To improve the quality and standards of care further the service should take account of the following recommendation(s):  When a child returns to the home after being missing from care or away from the home without permission, the responsible local authority must provide an opportunity for the child to have an independent return home interview. Homes should take account of information provided by such interviews when assessing risks and putting arrangements in place to protect each child.

p.5

What the inspection judgements mean

At the interim inspection we make a judgement on whether the home has improved in effectiveness, sustained effectiveness, or declined in effectiveness since the previous full inspection. This is in line with the Inspection of children's homes: framework for inspection.

p.6

Information about this inspection

Inspectors have looked closely at the experiences and progress of children and young people living in the children's home. Inspectors considered the quality of work and the difference adults make to the lives of children and young people. They read case files, watched how professional staff work with children, young people and each other and discussed the effectiveness of help and care given to children and young people. Wherever possible, they talked to children, young people and their families. In addition the inspectors have tried to understand what the children's home knows about how well it is performing, how well it is doing and what difference it is making for the children and young people who it is trying to help, protect and look after. This inspection focused on the effectiveness of the home and the progress and experiences of children and young people since the most recent full inspection.
