This provision is good

 Staff organise their time effectively and help children to follow up their own particular interests. Children develop close friendships and play well together. They are aware of their boundaries and respond positively to adults.  Staff make good use of special themes to plan new learning experiences and link the different learning areas. In this way they help children to make good progress in their learning, given their individual starting points.  Children especially enjoy the many opportunities to make pictures and models using different tools and materials. Staff interact sensitively to extend children's learning through their interest in creativity.  The management team places a strong emphasis on safeguarding. In particular the team use audits effectively to determine any issues that need further attention. Staff are equally vigilant in keeping children safe on the premises.  The manager is committed to continual improvement and maintains an ongoing

development plan. She uses rigorous systems of monitoring to help focus on relevant aspects and set appropriate targets.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 Staff do not provide a wide range of opportunities for children to participate in learning experiences in an outdoor environment.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

 provide more opportunities for children to take part in outdoor activities to further extend their learning in all areas.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed children taking part in a range of activities.  The inspector talked with members of staff and parents.  The inspector interviewed the manager.  The inspector carried out a joint observation with the manager.  The inspector sampled the documentation, in particular that relating to children's progress and safeguarding.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The management team is effective in deploying staff and monitoring children's progress. The manager has recently introduced a new system of appraisals and supervisions which is enabling her to better support staff in their professional development. Staff have numerous opportunities to attend training events, which help them to diversify their approach and improve their teaching. The manager provides clear information for parents about the educational provision. Parents have good opportunities to communicate with staff about their children's learning and to contribute to children's individual planning. Safeguarding is effective. Staff are well trained in child protection and are fully aware of their responsibilities. The manager involves staff in her self-evaluation and liaises with the local church to enable further improvements to the overall provision.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

Staff are flexible in their approach to teaching. They allow children to take the lead and explore independently. Staff are always on hand to offer help, when needed, and to engage children in conversation about their activities. Staff promote learning effectively. For example, they suggest ideas, introduce new words and model the use of numbers. As a result, children learn to concentrate on their chosen tasks and often spend long periods of time engaged in their exploration. Children enjoy taking part in imaginary play and are well supported by staff, who take on various roles and encourage children to use their imagination or communicate their ideas. Children learn about the natural environment on visits to a local park.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Staff know the children well and are knowledgeable about their differing care needs. Children are content and keen to take part in activities. They approach adults with confidence and enjoy spending time with them. Staff are consistent in their management of behaviour and deal calmly with any incidents. They are adept at maintaining a harmonious atmosphere. Children learn how to keep themselves and others safe. Staff are attentive to good hygiene, providing fresh fruit to help children understand the importance of healthy eating.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children benefit from a well-planned programme of activities, enabling them to acquire useful skills in all areas of learning. Children develop good early reading and writing skills and an awareness of mathematical concepts. Staff ensure that children with special educational needs are supported by good partnership working to help them progress in their learning. Therefore all children's needs are met effectively, and they are well prepared for their further learning at school.
