This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:
The staff's assessments of children's learning and development are not yet thorough enough. They do not identify children's next steps effectively or provide challenging activities to help close any gaps in learning, or help them make good progress. At times, the nursery's risk assessments are not sufficiently robust. This means children's welfare is not always promoted well when on outings. Self-evaluation is not sufficiently focused on improving teaching and learning. The staff do not ask children, parents or other professionals their views to help improve her practice. Staff do not ask parents for a wide enough range of information about children's existing skills and knowledge when they first start.
p.1
It has the following strengths
Children have warm relationships with staff, who are kind and caring. Staff follow young children's individual routines to help them settle well and feel secure. Staff encourage children to develop their independence and self-help skills during routines throughout the day. Children behave very well and all staff are consistent in praising positive behaviour. They encourage children to share and take turns.

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

strengthen self-evaluation with particular regard to improving the quality of teaching and learning, and find ways to include the views of parents, children and other professionals find out more about children's prior learning and development when they first begin to attend and use this information to help establish accurate starting points.
p.2
Inspection activities
The inspector carried out a tour of the premises with the deputy manager, viewing both indoors and outdoors. The inspector took account of the written views of parents. The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities and assessed the impact this has on children's learning. The inspector completed a joint observation with the deputy manager. The inspector held meetings with the deputy manager and spoke to staff and children at appropriate times during the inspection. The inspector looked at a selection of children's records, policies and procedures, and a range of other documentation. The inspector checked evidence of staff members' suitability, qualifications and training.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management requires improvement
Arrangements for safeguarding are effective. Staff are aware of their role and responsibility to protect the children in their care. Procedures for recruitment, selection and induction are appropriate. All staff working with children have undergone Disclosure and Barring Service checks. Risk assessments are undertaken, but staff do not always recognise every potential risk, especially with regard to outings. However, they do supervise children appropriately so they do not come to any harm. All staff hold first-aid certificates, which helps them to respond to children's accidents. Regular support for staff and annual appraisals enable management to help their continued professional development. Staff are well qualified and complete a range of training to update their skills. Evaluation of the nursery is in place. However, the weaknesses in practice have not been identified. In addition, staff, parents and children have not been involved in this

process to ensure their views are considered. Staff regularly exchange information with parents about children's daily experiences and care routines. Parents are complimentary about the care their children receive when attending the nursery.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement
Babies like to explore the space available and investigate a good range of resources. They benefit from having plenty of space to develop their physical skills and mobility. Babies respond well to the individual attention they receive, for example, when they are having cuddles. Staff use suitable strategies to promote children's language and communication skills. They provide effective support for those children who are learning English as an additional language, for example, introducing signing and new words to help them communicate. Staff observe children's achievements. However, some staff fail to use this information appropriately to plan and provide specific activities that support children's individual progress and close any gaps in their learning. This means that children make steady rather than good progress. There also remains a weakness in planning the next steps for children's learning, as staff do not gain enough information about their starting
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement
Children confidently explore their environment. However, staff do not always provide a stimulating learning environment. Therefore, children are not consistently engaged or challenged in their learning. Children enjoy nutritious snacks and meals. Staff encourage their independence at mealtimes as they learn to feed themselves. They have daily opportunities for fresh air. Regular trips into the local community help children to understand about the world around them. They enjoy yoga and dance sessions, which promote their physical skills.
p.3
Outcomes for children require improvement
All children, including those in receipt of funded early education, make some progress in their learning. The information gathered through observing what children do and assessing their progress is not used well enough to help them make consistently good progress.
