This provision is good

 Children settle well and develop good relationships with the childminder. They are happy, confident and emotionally secure.  Communication between the childminder and parents is very good. They share information each day to provide consistency of care.  The childminder effectively supports children's well-being and health. For example, she teaches them about healthy eating.  Children learn to behave very well. The childminder acts as a good role model; for example, she teaches children to play well together and to help tidy the toys.  Children make good progress in their learning and development. The childminder identifies, and promptly addresses, gaps in their learning through accurate assessment and good-quality teaching.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder undertakes some useful reflection of her provision but her self- evaluation is not always robust enough to help her target improvements as precisely as possible.  Although children have access to a wide range of interesting toys, at times, the presentation of resources is not as effective as possible in maintaining their interest in activities.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 strengthen self-evaluation to enable action to be targeted as precisely as possible to continually improve the quality of the provision  make better use of the resources available to sustain children's interest more fully during activities.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector looked at relevant documentation, including the registration and first-aid certificates and a sample of policies.  The inspector observed the interaction between the childminder and the children.  The inspector looked at the quality of the learning environment.  The inspector looked at letters from parents and took account of their views.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The childminder keeps up to date with changes to child protection procedures and has developed robust systems to keep the environment safe for children. For example, she checks the condition of toys and equipment each day. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder regularly meets with other childminders to share and discuss new ideas. She uses information gained from colleagues to improve her provision and provide new experiences for the children.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder provides a wide variety of fun experiences for the children in her home and outdoors. For example, they visit local parks and playgroups. Children also enjoy visits to the library to listen to stories and to borrow books to look at with the childminder. The childminder completes regular observations of children during their play and identifies what they are interested in. She uses this information well to plan for the next steps in their learning. Children have many opportunities to develop their social skills and their communication and language skills. The childminder is particularly effective in working with children who are learning English as an additional language.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Communication with parents is extremely good. For example, the childminder makes herself available to chat at the beginning and end of each day. Parents comment that they are happy with the information they receive about their children's play. Children develop respect for people from different communities through a variety of toys, activities and experiences. For example, they participate in activities to celebrate cultural festivals and look at books about people from around the world that are written in English and another language. Toys and equipment are stored at the children's level. Children independently take out the toys they want and help to put them away after playing. Children are emotionally secure and enjoy sharing cuddles with the childminder.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress towards the early learning goals. They respond well to the praise they receive when they try new things or show kindness. Children enjoy their time with the childminder and have fun as they play with their friends. They are prepared well for their move to school.
