p.2

children and young people since the most recent full inspection

The manager has dealt effectively with the requirements made at the previous inspection. The young people’s overall experience is positive and they like living at the home. The young people said that the staff ‘are great’ and that ‘they are always there to help me.’

p.2

children and young people since the most recent full inspection

Young people make good progress from their starting point. Those who previously did not attend school are now attending sessions regularly. Young people and staff build trusted relationships, which helps the young people to feel safe and cared for. Staff members respond well to the young people’s needs and also arrange specialist therapeutic help if this is needed. As a result, young people show a significant decrease in their challenging behaviour from when they moved in.

p.2

children and young people since the most recent full inspection

The staff team’s support of the young people helps them to establish and maintain relationships with their family and friends. The team help the young people to learn independence skills and how to keep themselves safe when they use the internet. Staff members support young people with their sexual identity and provide them with good advice on having safe relationships. Young people get along well together and there is no bullying.

p.2

children and young people since the most recent full inspection

The manager ensures that all complaints made by the young people are effectively dealt with. Young people are satisfied with the response that they receive. The manager reports all allegations of abuse and child protection concerns to the local area designated officer and the placing authorities respectively. Investigations into abuse are handled sensitively and fairly. The manager ensures that Ofsted is informed of all significant events about the protection of children.

p.2

children and young people since the most recent full inspection

The staff implement good behaviour management plans and respond consistently well to young people’s needs. As a result, young people have not gone missing from the home and the use of restraint to manage unsafe behaviours is reducing. Young people and staff have helpful discussions after such incidents. As a result, young people and staff understand what happened and make plans to avoid similar incidents happening in the future. Concerns raised by young people about physical intervention is appropriately investigated.

p.2

children and young people since the most recent full inspection

Young people respond well to incentive schemes, which staff use to promote positive behaviour and to help young people to recognise their personal achievements. Sanctions are only used infrequently and are not excessive. The manager is mindful not to cause a young person distress and does not use sanctions during an incident.

p.3

children and young people since the most recent full inspection

The manager now ensures that the monthly monitoring of the quality of care is effective and there are no repeat issues from the previous month’s report. Staff now receive regular supervision, they are appropriately trained and the statement of purpose accurately reflects the service provided. The home is decorated and maintained to a good standard. Bedroom door alarms, locks on internal doors and unnecessary signs have been removed to ensure that young people’s accommodation is homely. The manager has undertaken a review of the home’s location to identify concerns in the area. He has also made links with managers of other children’s homes to form a network that will safeguard young people. All of these improvements were made in response to the requirements raised at the previous inspection.

p.3

children and young people since the most recent full inspection

The manager works collaboratively with placing authorities and young people’s schools/colleges. A social worker reports that the manager is ‘good and creative at finding ways to support the young person.’ The social worker also comments that it is a good placement for the young person who considers it be their home.

Information about this inspection

Inspectors have looked closely at the experiences and progress of children and young people living in the children's home. Inspectors considered the quality of work and the difference adults make to the lives of children and young people. They read case files, watched how professional staff work with children, young people and each other and discussed the effectiveness of help and care given to children and young people. Wherever possible, they talked to children, young people and their families. In addition the inspectors have tried to understand what the children's home knows about how well it is performing, how well it is doing and what difference it is making for the children and young people who it is trying to help, protect and look after. This inspection focused on the effectiveness of the home and the progress and experiences of children and young people since the most recent full inspection.
