p.1

This provision is good

 Children are developing a good understanding of how to use language effectively. For example, they are learning how to take part in conversations and how to explain their thoughts and ideas.  The childminder has a good partnership with parents. She keeps them well-informed of their children's progress, which helps them become more involved in their children's learning.  The children are very settled in the care of this kind, considerate childminder. The home is safe and children are confident to explore and learn.  Children make good progress from their starting points. They are developing the skills they need for their next steps in learning.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not always support children effectively to develop their understanding of others in the local or wider community.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 strengthen opportunities for children to learn about people in their local community and the wider area.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector and childminder discussed the systems she uses to observe and record the children's progress and the documents she uses to support her work.  The inspector completed observations of the children as they were engaged in activities with the childminder.  The inspector viewed the rooms and resources the children use.  The inspector discussed with the childminder her systems of self-evaluation, and how she uses this to improve her childcare practice.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder clearly understands her role in protecting children and is confident in her knowledge of the reporting procedures if she has any concerns about children in her care. Children have safe spaces to play and learn in a well- organised environment. The childminder reviews her practice effectively and considers ways to improve outcomes for children. For example, she looks at the resources she provides and ensures they meet the learning needs of the individual children effectively. The childminder uses observations and assessments to plan for the next steps in the children's learning. She knows the procedures to follow if she needs to seek guidance from other professionals, if she has concerns about children's progress.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

Children are enthusiastic in their play. For example, they use their imagination when drawing pictures and describe what they want to draw. The childminder helps to extend this activity and encourages their language development. For example, she asks the children questions about the family members in their picture. The childminder provides good opportunities for the children to develop their physical skills. For example, children enjoy visits to the park to feed the ducks and climb the steps of the slide. Children enjoy listening to age-appropriate stories and snuggle closely to the childminder as they listen intently.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder has created a warm, welcoming and safe environment for the children to learn as they play. She knows the children well and responds promptly to meet their individual needs. Children enjoy comfort and reassurance from the childminder, which helps them to feel secure. They enjoy the childminder's company and turn to her for reassurance, to which she responds enthusiastically. This close relationship helps to promote children's emotional needs very well. Children are caring with each other; they learn to share and to take turns as the play. The childminder praises the children's achievements and this builds their self-confidence.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are developing their communication and language skills well. For example, they enjoy talking with the childminder and singing songs together. Children are developing personal-care skills, which will help them in their eventual move to school. For example, they learn how to tie laces and button their coats.
