This provision is good

 The childminder carefully checks the identity of visitors and ensures her home is safe and secure. She effectively removes or minimises risks to children.  The childminder has a secure understanding of children's interests and personalities. She is committed to helping children to reach their full potential and provides a good range of experiences and activities to support their development.  The childminder effectively encourages children to build relationships and social skills with other children and adults during visits to toddler groups. Children observe birds in their aviaries at the local park and enjoy going on a bus to the library. This successfully helps to broaden children's range of experiences within the local community.  Children are treated with warmth and kindness. They form secure attachments with the childminder and demonstrate that they feel safe and emotionally secure.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not make best use of available professional training opportunities to further develop her practice.  The childminder does not always support children to become independent in managing their personal care needs.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 engage in available continuous professional development opportunities to expand understanding of current best practice and improve the quality of teaching further  increase children's opportunities to learn how to manage their own personal needs independently.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of the childminder's teaching during activities indoors, and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector completed joint observations with the childminder.  The inspector looked at relevant documentation and evidence of the suitability of the childminder and household members.  The inspector took account of the views of parents from documentation completed by them.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder demonstrates a secure understanding of what would give her cause for concern and her responsibilities to protect children from harm and neglect. She implements secure procedures to ensure children remain safe on outings. Children are taught how to cross the road safely and are supported to take reasonable risks on large play apparatus in the park. The childminder regularly reflects on her practice, identifying her strengths and areas for development. Clear systems are in place to monitor children's progress. This allows the childminder to see how children develop over time and helps to identify any gaps in their learning in a timely manner.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder successfully builds on the children's interests as they play. She questions children about their activities to develop their existing skills and knowledge. The childminder actively supports young children's developing language and communication skills. She engages children in purposeful conversation and introduces new vocabulary, such as octopus, as they explore the sea creatures. Children thoroughly enjoy snuggling up to the childminder to have a story. They listen well and are encouraged to talk about what they see. Children learn about opposites, such as open and closed, and solve problems as they complete puzzles. They concentrate, persist and demonstrate pride in their achievements. The childminder has positive relationships with parents. Parents are informed about their child's day through daily discussions and the completion of a daily diary. They comment positively about the care and learning provided.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children are happy, settled and quickly develop strong bonds with the childminder. Flexible settling-in arrangements are implemented to support smooth transitions into the childminder's care. The childminder works closely with parents to develop a good understanding of children's care needs, families and home lives. She supports children to manage their feelings and behaviour and to understand the effect this can have on others. The childminder boosts children's confidence and self-esteem with praise and reassurance. Children enjoy being physically active in the fresh air and are encouraged to eat healthy foods. They are effectively encouraged to help with practical tasks, such as helping to tidy away their toys.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

All children make good progress in their learning in relation to their starting points. They are developing the skills and capacity to learn in preparation for the next stage of their learning, such as pre-school and school.
