This provision is good

 The childminder carefully assesses children's achievements and tracks the progress they make. She identifies gaps quickly and promptly puts plans in place to address their individual learning needs.  The childminder provides a broad range of experiences that build on children's interests. Children enjoy taking part in activities and make good progress from their starting points.  The childminder builds good relationships with parents. They regularly share information on children's progress, which helps to promote children's learning at the childminder's and at home.  Children form warm and positive relationships with adults and each other. They show a strong sense of belonging and are confident in their own abilities.  The childminder has met the recommendations from the last inspection. For example, she regularly reflects on her provision and seeks information from parents and children to look at what she does well and where to improve.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 Children have few opportunities to explore and develop an excellent understanding of technology.  Children do not always have the best opportunities to explore, investigate and learn about the natural world.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 strengthen opportunities to help young children explore and develop a better understanding of technology  improve learning experiences for children to explore, investigate and to learn more about the natural world.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector held discussions with the childminder and children throughout the inspection.  The inspector observed the interaction between the childminder and children during activities.  The inspector viewed the areas of the premises used for childminding.  The inspector looked at a range of documentation, including policies, procedures, risk assessments and the children's learning and assessment records.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The childminder has a good knowledge of her responsibility to keep children safe. Her home is secure and she is mindful of children's safety when on outings. Safeguarding is effective. She knows the procedures to follow should she have concerns about the welfare of a child. The childminder continuously adapts her practice to meet the needs of all children. For example, she networks with other childminders in the local area and accesses training to help update her skills and knowledge. This helps her to make positive changes to improve her practice further. The childminder has strong relationships with other settings that children attend and they regularly share positive information. The childminder helps prepare children well for their move to pre-school or school. Parents are extremely positive about the service she provides.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder has a good understanding of how children learn and develop. She knows children well and uses her accurate assessments to plan activities that she knows they will enjoy. For example, she teaches children to identify shapes and counting when using construction blocks to build towers. Children's language is developing well. They confidently communicate their needs and enjoy meaningful interactions with others. Children gain early writing skills through fun activities and, for example, they enjoy talking about their drawings. The childminder extends children's learning well as they engage in their chosen play. For example, she asks skilful questions and provides new words for the children to learn.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children are extremely confident and settled with the childminder. She provides a warm and welcoming environment and consistently praises children, which helps to build their self-esteem. Children behave well and learn to be kind and considerate as they play. The childminder promotes their independence well; for example, young children help to prepare snacks, tidy up the toys and manage their personal needs. Children develop a good understanding of how to stay heathy. For example, they enjoy a variety of nutritious meals and snacks, get plenty of fresh air and enjoy physical activities at the park. The childminder effectively promotes children's social skills, such as when they regularly go to community groups and mix with others.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children develop positive attitudes towards learning. They show curiosity and develop early communication skills. Children have a real love of books, which helps them gain early reading skills at a young age. They are well prepared for the next stage in their education.
