This provision is good

 The childminder offers children a wide range of absorbing learning experiences that challenge their interests effectively. Children make good progress from their starting points. They are excited and eager to learn.  The childminder skilfully promote children's communication and language skills. For example, she encourages the children to take part in meaningful conversations, using their words to recall past events and what they would like to do.  The childminder has developed strong partnerships with parents. She keeps them fully informed of their children's achievements so they are able to contribute to their children's ongoing progress and extend learning at home.  The childminder is kind and sensitive, and she offers gentle and thoughtful care. This helps to support children's personal development and emotional well-being effectively.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not make the best use of all opportunities to strengthen children's understanding that print carries meaning to build their early reading skills.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 increase opportunities for children to become more familiar with print to promote their early literacy skills further.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector and childminder discussed the systems she uses to observe and record the children's progress and the documents she uses to support her work.  The inspector completed observations of the children as they were engaged in activities with the childminder.  The inspector viewed the rooms and resources the children use.  The inspector and childminder discussed how she evaluates the childcare service.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder understands her role in safeguarding children. She knows the indicators that would cause concern and her responsibility to record and report any concerns to the appropriate professionals. The childminder is fully committed to improving her childcare service. She regularly reflects on the quality of her provision to help improve outcomes for children, and involves the families in her evaluation process. The childminder ensures the resources and activities are challenging to meet children's changing interests and learning needs effectively. She uses an effective assessment process to monitor the children's progress and plan for their next steps in learning.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder uses a varied range of activities to help the children learn and develop. For example, she uses play with skittles to help children to learn about counting and to develop their throwing skills. Children make their own choices about play, with the childminder's effective support. For example, when the children decide they want to look at books, she finds those that reflect their current interest in dinosaurs and extends this interest into their sensory play. This helps children develop good levels of self-confidence and begin to make connections. Children are developing an understanding of the local community and nature, where they learn how to take safe risks and develop their physical skills. For example, the childminder takes them on trips to parks and farms, where they learn about caring for animals and how to ride ponies.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children are confident and self-assured in the childminder's care. She has created a warm and caring environment where children are secure. The childminder knows the children well. She manages their behaviour sensitively and helps children understand how to manage their feelings. This positive care helps children to prepare for further changes in their lives, such as their move to school. Children learn about similarities and differences between themselves and others. For example, the childminder helps children to understand about other people's lifestyles through activities in the home and the community.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children develop the skills they need to be ready for the next stage in their education, particularly in their communication and language skills. For example, they learn how to use their words to express their thoughts and ideas, and to build their conversation skills.
