This provision is good
The childminder develops warm relationships with children. They settle quickly, and feel safe and secure in her welcoming home. The childminder has a good knowledge of how children learn. She provides them with a variety of challenging activities based on their individual interests and abilities, and helps children to make good progress. The childminder assesses children's learning effectively. She identifies any gaps in their development and acts promptly to provide targeted support. Children's behaviour is good. They learn to share, take turns and respect each other. There is good and constant interaction between the childminder and children. The childminder effectively supports children's communication and speaking skills through lots of discussion, helping to prepare them for their future learning. The childminder has strong links with parents. She values their views when evaluating the quality of her provision and planning improvements.
p.1
It is not yet outstanding because:
The childminder occasionally misses opportunities to help extend children's understanding of space, shape and size. The childminder does not always give children sufficient time to explore some experiences and activities further before she intervenes in their play.
p.1
What the setting needs to do to improve further
To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

provide more opportunities for children to develop their understanding of space, shape and size ensure children have sufficient time to explore activities to their own satisfaction.
p.2
Inspection activities
The inspector observed the quality of the childminder's interactions and teaching, and their impact on children's learning. The inspector viewed the areas of the premises and garden used for childminding. The inspector looked at children's records, planning and a range of other documents, including training certificates. The inspector spoke to the childminder and children at various times during the inspection. The inspector took account of the views of parents spoken to during the inspection.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
Safeguarding is effective. The childminder knows what to do if she has concerns about children's welfare and the procedures to follow to keep them safe. Her risk assessments are very thorough and she uses them well to help minimise possible hazards to children. The childminder is committed to improving the quality of her provision. She extends her skills by attending training and by regularly meeting with local childcare providers to share good practice. She has applied her knowledge well to help children explore letters and sounds and to develop their early writing skills. The childminder works well with parents and other providers, such as pre-schools. She shares information with them about children's learning needs, so children receive a consistent approach to their care and learning.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder supports children's learning well through play. She routinely counts items with children and helps them to become familiar with number names and their values. For example, during a toys' tea party, she encouraged children to count the number of guests and identify the number of toy cups they would need. The childminder provides many opportunities for children to develop their control and coordination; for example, children delight and show a sense of pride as they learn to use tools, such as scissors, more skilfully. Children make good progress in developing their language skills. The childminder regularly introduces new words to help build their vocabulary.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
Children are happy and secure in the childminder's well-organised home. This helps them to develop their independence and confidence. For instance, toys and activities are stored so they are easily accessible for children. The childminder manages children's behaviour effectively. She talks calmly and sensitively with them to help them to understand how their behaviour affects others. Children enjoy a range of outdoor activities to develop their physical skills. They build relationships with other children and adults, for example, during visits to parks and attending activities at the local children's centre and other toddler groups. Children enjoy healthy home-cooked food and the childminder teaches them about good manners and making healthy choices.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children make good progress from their starting points. Children communicate their needs and ideas confidently and develop good literacy skills in preparation for moving on to school. They enjoy a good range of books. Older ones are beginning to identify some sounds and letters, and write their names.
