This provision is good

 The childminder makes detailed observations of children's engagement in activities. She uses this information well to assess children's progress and identify their next steps. Children make good progress from their starting points.  The childminder works closely with parents, providing good advice and support to maintain a consistent approach to children's care and welfare.  Children securely communicate their needs and ideas. They listen well to instruction and confidently ask questions, for example, when reading books together.  Children form strong attachments with the childminder. The childminder uses her training well to support children's emotional well-being.  The childminder seeks advice and support effectively from other childminders and early years professionals to help her develop her practice.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 There are fewer opportunities for children to make choices about their play, which, on occasion, hinders their exploration and learning.  The childminder does not gain as much information as possible from parents about children's development when they first start, to influence her initial planning.  Children do not have many opportunities to explore technology and how things work, operate and move.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 develop further opportunities for children to make more choices about their play  gain further information from parents about children's learning and development when they start at the setting  provide further opportunities for children to explore technology and how things work, operate and move.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching as children played inside.  The inspector spoke with the childminder about her understanding of the Early Years Foundation Stage requirements.  The inspector considered the views of parents spoken to on the day of inspection.  The inspector sampled documentation, including written views of parents, children's assessment records, and policies and procedures.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The childminder evaluates her provision effectively, understanding her strengths, training needs and areas for improvement well. For example, she has identified the need to extend her resources to challenge older children further. The childminder monitors children's progress effectively, enabling her to identify any gaps in learning promptly. The childminder works successfully with other settings children attend to promote consistency in their learning. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a good understanding of the procedures to follow should she have any concern about children's welfare. She teaches children well how to identify possible risks. For example, children confidently show the rough edge on the dough cutter for the childminder to remove promptly.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder uses information from parents about their children's ongoing learning at home and her good knowledge of children's next steps to plan an exciting range of experiences, overall. Children work well together to make some decisions about their play. During the inspection, they all agreed to play with the dough and chose which tools to use. The childminder encourages children to create freely and imaginatively. Children have a good sense of ownership. They each have their own creative book and confidently talk about what they have drawn, answering the childminder's questions, and show pride in their achievements. Children cuddle close to share a favourite story. Younger children persevere well with tasks. For example, they solve problems to align the pages in a book to see the pictures more clearly.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children have good opportunities to be outside and active; for example, regular visits to the allotment help them to gain a good understanding of nature and growth. The childminder makes good use of the local environment to extend children's learning experiences. Children enjoy drama, music and creative workshops, which help them to meet different people in their community and build broader friendships. The childminder supports children's social skills well in preparation for school. She encourages children to help tidy away, giving them specific tasks to encourage their independence. Children enjoy the opportunity to help clean the table and prepare the fruit for snack. The childminder supports children's personal care needs well, providing encouragement and reassurance to progress their skills.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children gain good skills for their next stage in learning and eventual move to school. They persist with tasks and show a positive attitude to their learning. Children recall past experiences and communicate their ideas well, successfully building on their learning.
