This provision is good

 The childminder is skilful at extending children's play. She provides interesting experiences for children that motivate them to learn. As a result, teaching is consistently of a good standard.  The childminder plans effectively for children's next steps in learning. This is particularly evident in mathematics, and children benefit from her teaching and knowledge.  The childminder makes effective and targeted improvements to her setting. This brings about positive changes to the education programmes she plans for children. As a result, children make good progress.  Children are secure and happy, and play with confidence. They share space, ideas and resources, and build very positive relationships with others.  The childminder successfully promotes children's learning at home and in the setting. Children benefit from a shared approach to their care and learning needs. Partnerships with parents and other professionals are strong and effective.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 Children do not benefit from a wide range of media and materials to explore and investigate using their senses.  The childminder does not make full use of all opportunities to help children to develop their understanding of letter shapes and sounds.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 develop further opportunities for children to use their senses to investigate resources and activities, to satisfy their curious and exploratory nature  make full use of all play opportunities to develop further children's early literacy skills.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the childminder's interactions with children.  The inspector spoke with children and took the written views of parents into account.  The inspector looked at a sample of documentation, including policies and children's learning records.  The inspector conducted a joint observation.  The inspector held a leadership and management discussion with the childminder.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder promotes children's safety and welfare effectively. She understands child protection issues and safeguarding procedures; she knows the action to take if she has any concerns about a child. The childminder has identified and attended training that has successfully improved educational outcomes for children. For example, since training the childminder has developed ongoing creative project work with children. The childminder works hard to evaluate her provision. She is good at driving improvement forward. For example, the childminder has developed a mud kitchen in the garden where children actively experiment and explore new materials. The childminder has built firm and successful relationships with other professionals and this helps to smooth children's move to school.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder interacts with children in a very positive way to extend their learning. For example, children pretended to go on holiday on an aeroplane and the childminder provided them with a picnic basket for when they got there. The childminder makes accurate, and well-evaluated, observations of children's achievements and tracks their progress. She uses this information to identify children's next steps, planning activities that motivate children to learn. Children enjoy playing outside; therefore, the childminder plans a good range of outdoor experiences that help promote children's all-round development. Children get lots of fresh air and the opportunity to develop physically. Children show interest and engage well with the activities on offer. For example, children relish looking after chickens, and count and collect their eggs.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children thrive in the warm and caring environment, developing good bonds with the childminder. For example, children are happy when they wake from a nap and enjoy a cuddle with her. The childminder builds good relationships with parents and tailors care and learning for each child to promote continuity. Children show kindness and develop positive attitudes towards each other. For example, older children instinctively help younger children to put on their socks and jumpers.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children develop independence skills that will help them at school. They choose their own resources confidently and follow their own ideas and plans. Children learn to manage their own personal care and hygiene routines; they enjoy singing a special song to help them wipe their feet. Children gain good early mathematical skills.
