This provision is good

 The childminder has a good knowledge of how to promote children's learning and development. She provides interesting and challenging experiences that help to meet the needs of each child. Children make good progress.  The childminder listens carefully to children during activities and skilfully asks questions that help them to think and express their ideas.  The childminder demonstrates a commitment to training to improve her already good skills, to benefit children.  Children settle very well and feel safe. The childminder treats children with care and has a strong understanding of their emotional needs.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not always encourage children to use a wide range of technological equipment. Children do not build a firm understanding of how to use technology in various situations for a particular purpose.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 help children to practise using technology for a variety of purposes.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed activities and assessed the support for children's learning indoors and outdoors.  The inspector spoke to the childminder about her understanding of safeguarding.  The inspector sampled the childminder's documentation, including policies, learning journals, assessments and planning.  The inspector viewed the childminder's certificates of training courses undertaken and suitability documentation.  The inspector took account of the views of parents spoken to on the day.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The childminder understands her responsibilities to keep children safe and the procedures to follow if she has a concern for their welfare. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder monitors children's progress well; her planning is thorough and learning outcomes are clearly defined. She plans activities to help children progress in their learning. The childminder reflects on her practice and attends training to make improvements. For example, she attended a food safety course, which has helped her to plan a healthy menu. Children benefit from nutritious meals that meet their dietary needs.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder makes daily observations and assesses children's development. She keeps an accurate record of children's achievements in individual books, which track their progress over time. The childminder consults parents about the care and education of their children. She involves parents in their children's learning, sharing the progress they make. The childminder plans activities and play experiences for each child's next steps, which helps them to progress. The childminder works closely with teachers to complement older children's learning at school. For example, she helps children practise letter formation for their handwriting homework. Children learn mathematical language, such as 'heavy' and 'light', and 'long' and 'short'. For example, the childminder introduced language for weight and measurement when out on a walk. She talked to children about the length of a lorry and the weight of a bag.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder provides a homely environment. Children are happy and secure with the childminder. They have formed a close bond with her. The childminder is a positive role model; she reminds children of the rules and routines, and uses frequent praise to help them understand what is expected. Children's behaviour is good; they learn to share and get along together well. The childminder organises her resources that help engage children in purposeful play and exploration both indoors and outdoors. She supports children to learn how to use the play equipment safely. The childminder promotes children's good health. She encourages children to eat healthy foods and they benefit from daily exercise. For example, children have the opportunity to stretch their muscles and play in the fresh air daily. In addition, children learn about the natural world through a variety of interesting experiences, including outings to feed the ducks.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are independent and confident learners. They learn a good range of skills that prepare them for their next stage in learning and for school when the time comes.
