This provision is good

 The childminder is reflective. Since registration, she has successfully used feedback to improve the provision. She uses children's ideas and views to shape the provision to meet their needs. Parents' views emphasise their strong levels of satisfaction, particularly in relation to the flexibility the childminder adopts in order to meet the needs of every child and family.  The way the childminder organises her space supports children to play and have fun both inside and outside. Children enjoy playing with a good range of toys and interesting materials. The different needs of older and younger children are recognised and successfully met.  The childminder links very effectively with parents and school teachers to find out about the needs of the children and plan ways she can support them in her home. Regular communication and the sharing of information with all relevant professionals helps to ensure that the children who need it most are very well supported.

p.1

This provision is good

 Relationships are strong. Children form relaxed, positive relationships with the friendly childminder, who knows them and their families well. Children settle quickly and build strong friendships as they have fun together. They respond well to the imaginative ways that the childminder uses to promote their good behaviour.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder has not yet developed a professional development plan that is targeted at enhancing her knowledge and skills, as a way of helping her to continually improve the provision for children.  Although the childminder provides nutritious breakfasts, some of the after-school snacks and drinks do not consistently reinforce children's understanding of healthy eating.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

 plan additional ways to enhance knowledge and skills and use this to further develop the quality of the provision for children  review and improve the nutritional value of the snacks and drinks provided after school.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities and assessed the impact this has on children's learning and enjoyment.  The inspector completed a joint observation with the childminder.  The inspector held a meeting with the childminder and discussed her self-evaluation. She looked at relevant documentation, such as the operational procedures and training, and checked evidence of suitability.  The inspector spoke with the children and took account of the views of parents using the childminder's own records.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The childminder is well qualified and successful in providing a service that nurtures children and provides fun play experiences that enhance children's learning in school. She works closely with the local authority to identify areas for further improvement, which she acts on swiftly. The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder has a secure understanding of her responsibilities and of relevant safety legislation, which she uses to keep children safe. She communicates well with other professionals as appropriate, to ensure that children's welfare is prioritised and the arrangements for their support are well coordinated. Since registration, the childminder has attended a small number of relevant training sessions and updated some aspects of her provision in response to guidance. She is reflective and makes changes to meet the needs of the children. For example, she has reorganised the furniture in her home to provide a special

space for every child to store their own belongings and to install a pool table that is very much enjoyed.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder uses her good knowledge of child development to ensure activities meet the needs of different ages and abilities. For example, the games console is equipped to provide programs of different difficulty levels to support every child's engagement or to challenge them. Through good ongoing communication with parents and school, the childminder plans how to meet the particular learning and social needs of every child. This includes working closely with school to enable children to attend extra-curricular activities. The childminder skilfully introduces ways to incorporate children's individual learning needs into fun activities. Examples of this are the ways she uses games to encourage children to write their own names or record information, such as scores. In addition, she provides table-top games that promote problem solving and deep thinking. These activities are effectively used by children to practise their handwriting and their counting

and calculating skills in mathematics. Children are well prepared for the next stage in their learning.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Introductory visits are used effectively to help children settle and feel comfortable in the childminder's home. The childminder is very friendly with the children, who develop relaxed relationships with her. Children behave well and respond positively to the reward systems that the childminder uses to encourage them. They take turns to use favourite equipment and they use two-player games collaboratively. The childminder supports children's independence in various ways that result in the development of good self-care skills. They swiftly learn about hanging up or storing their belongings, expected hygiene routines and sitting together for a social group snack time. Healthy breakfasts are provided each day and the childminder has some success in promoting healthy drinks and snacks. There is scope however, to ensure this is equally successful after school, when some snacks are less nutritious. Healthy lifestyles are promoted in other ways, including

regular visits to the local park and daily play in the garden.
