Effectiveness of the leadership and management Requires improvement Quality of teaching, learning and assessment Requires improvement Personal development, behaviour and welfare Requires improvement Outcomes for children Requires improvement

p.1

This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:

 The childminder does not always use her observations and assessments effectively to plan challenging activities that promote children's progress and prepare them well for the future.  The quality of teaching and childminder's interactions with the children do not always stimulate and challenge their learning and development. Therefore, children's good progress is not consistently supported.  The childminder's partnership with the local schools is not established, in order to support the continuity in the children's learning and development.  The childminder does not always make the best use of resources to support good quality learning experiences.  Self-evaluation procedures are not sufficiently robust to clearly identify ongoing target areas for improvement.

p.1

It has the following strengths

 Children are happy and demonstrate that they feel safe and emotionally secure. They naturally approach the childminder who responds to their needs accordingly.  The childminder supports children's general day-to-day needs appropriately. They have meals provided by their parents and have some opportunities for fresh air and exercise during trips to the park.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage the provider must:

p.2

Due Date

 ensure ongoing assessment is consistently used to inform the planning of challenging activities that sharply focus on children's precise learning needs to help them make good progress in their learning 30/11/2015

p.2

Due Date

 improve the quality of teaching to ensure all children receive consistent support during activities to help them make good progress 30/11/2015

p.2

Due Date

 establish partnerships with schools that children currently attend, to enhance and complement their learning. 30/11/2015

p.2

Due Date

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

Due Date

 develop procedures for self-evaluation to ensure ongoing targets for improvement are based on rigorous monitoring of practice and take account of parents' and children's views  make better use of resources to facilitate children's play and learning, in order to provide good quality learning experiences.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed activities and routines in the indoor areas. She spoke to the childminder throughout the observations and spent time interacting with the children.  The inspector completed joint observations with the childminder.  The inspector looked at children's records, planning documentation and a range of other documentation, including policies and procedures.  The inspector reviewed evidence of suitability for the childminder and other adults living within her home.  The inspector took account of the views of parents spoken to on the day.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management requires improvement

Since the last inspection, the childminder has received support and taken some steps to tackle the identified weaknesses. The childminder's knowledge of the learning and development requirements is beginning to improve and partnerships with parents are continuing to be developed. However, her teaching skills are inconsistent. The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder takes steps to minimise hazards around her home. She understands her responsibilities to protect children from abuse and neglect. The childminder has attended paediatric first-aid training which supports her to promote children's well-being in the event of a minor accident. She is beginning to identify her strengths and weaknesses. However, self-evaluation procedures are not yet sufficiently robust in evaluating the overall quality of the provision, including obtaining the views of parents and children.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement

The childminder demonstrates a general overview of the children's development and is continuing to develop her observation and assessment skills. However, she does not always effectively use what she knows about children's achievements to plan new experiences based on their precise learning needs. Nevertheless, children are happy and occupied. Children concentrate and are encouraged to make collage pictures of hedgehogs and ghosts. However, occasionally, these activities are over directed by the childminder and the range and choice of materials is sometimes minimal. This restricts children's opportunities to express their thoughts and ideas. The childminder talks to children about what they are doing during their activities. This supports younger children to use language to respond. However, sometimes the childminder lacks confidence when questioning and challenging children in order to improve their learning. Starting point information is now

obtained from the children's parents and procedures are being developed to share and exchange information with parents and pre-schools. However, the sharing of information with local schools is not yet established.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement

Children participate in occasional planned activities and can independently access some resources. However, the childminder does not always make the best use of the available resources and activities to captivate and sustain children's learning and interest. The childminder supports children to manage their behaviour, to be kind to one another and take turns. She praises children for their achievements, which boosts their confidence and self-esteem. The childminder takes children out into the local community. She helps them to make new friends during visits to toddler groups.

p.3

Outcomes for children require improvement

Children are making some progress in their learning and development in relation to their starting points. However, they are not consistently supported to make the best possible progress. One of the ways the childminder supports older children to be ready for school is by helping them to write their name and count.
