As a result, young people settle quickly in the home. A social worker commented: ‘Staff are well informed of their needs; young people seem to have settled very quickly into the routine of the home. Staff were very welcoming on their arrival and helped them to feel less anxious.’

Young people report, during resident’s meetings, that they feel safe in the home. One young person said: ‘I feel safe as there are lots of helpful people to talk to. I get on really well with my key worker. They check out if I am feeling ok and talk to me about my family.’ Detailed one to one work regularly takes place with young people to ensure their care needs are met. They have contact with external advocates, who are available to support them to make representations if needed.

As a result, young people’s behaviour has improved. There has been one occasion where staff used physical intervention, when de- escalation techniques were not successful. Staff and managers have reflected to see how they could act differently in such a situation. This promotes insight in to behaviour management approaches.

Information about this inspection

Inspectors have looked closely at the experiences and progress of children and young people living in the children's home. Inspectors considered the quality of work and the difference adults make to the lives of children and young people. They read case files, watched how professional staff work with children, young people and each other and discussed the effectiveness of help and care given to children and young people. Wherever possible, they talked to children, young people and their families. In addition the inspectors have tried to understand what the children's home knows about how well it is performing, how well it is doing and what difference it is making for the children and young people who it is trying to help, protect and look after. This inspection focused on the effectiveness of the home and the progress and experiences of children and young people since the most recent full inspection.
