p.1

This provision is good

 The childminder knows the children well and provides a welcoming environment indoors and outdoors, to stimulate their interests and play, and meet their care needs.  Children are settled and secure. The childminder encourages their enthusiasm for learning and provides a wide choice of activities that promote their development across all areas of learning. Children make good progress from their starting points.  Behaviour management is very effective. Children learn to respect one another and their environment, and behave very well.  The childminder reflects on her practice and uses evaluation well to consider how she can improve further.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not always extend children's understanding further during their play, so they learn more about aspects that interest them.  Although the childminder communicates more with other settings children attend following her last inspection, to find out the activities they provide, she does not fully work with them and parents, to share and complement what children learn in their different learning environments.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 extend children's understanding further, so they learn more about topics that interest them during their play  strengthen the sharing of information with parents and other settings that children attend, to work more consistently to complement what children learn elsewhere.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed children and the childminder during their play indoors.  The inspector talked with the childminder and children at appropriate times throughout the inspection.  The inspector sampled relevant documentation, including the childminder's safeguarding policy and children's records of progress.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder is clear on her responsibility to protect children from harm and the procedures to follow should she have a child protection concern. She monitors the safety of her home effectively to ensure children play safely under her close supervision. The childminder regularly attends training to update her practice and improve children's experiences. This has prompted her to adapt her activities to develop children's listening and focus during their play, so they concentrate and follow instructions. The childminder includes the views of parents and builds on her strengths successfully to help her make improvements to her practice. She reviews children's progress through her observations of their play and assessment of what they learn. This helps her to identify and close any gaps in their learning promptly.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder includes children's ideas to help her plan activities. She takes a note of what each child likes to do and needs to learn next, and uses this effectively to develop their learning and help them progress. Children appreciate being involved in making decisions and like to learn independently. The childminder supports children well, building on their keen interest in numbers and drawing. She provides good resources for children to develop their early writing skills and concentrate on their designs. The childminder talks to the children during their play, encouraging their speech and communication. Children are keen to tell the childminder what they have been doing and what they want to do next, and the childminder is very responsive to their needs.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder makes safety a priority and successfully helps children learn how to keep safe. For example, she teaches them the importance of not running indoors and how to use scissors safely. Children become independent and learn to take care of their own care needs; for example, they use the toilet on their own and competently wash and dry their hands. The childminder is caring and attentive, and children learn to be considerate and respectful, following the childminder's positive role modelling.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children develop good listening skills and language to communicate well and confidently face new challenges. They enjoy practising their early writing skills and using numbers. Children enjoy learning, are independent and socialise well with others. These skills prepare them well for future learning and moving on to school.
