This provision is good

 The highly qualified childminder has an excellent understanding of how children learn. She joins in with their play, and they are eager to learn and motivated in all that they do.  The childminder gets to know her children well so that she has a clear picture of their interests and abilities. She identifies what children need to learn next, and plans appropriate ways to help children continue to make good progress in their learning and development.  Children settle easily and develop secure emotional attachments with the childminder. They are happy, confident and become more independent by making choices and decisions about what they want to do.  Children's communication skills are effectively promoted by the childminder who models good language and extends their vocabulary. She engages them well in conversations and asks them questions, giving them time to respond.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 On occasion, the childminder does not provide enough consistent opportunities for children to see print in the environment.  The childminder does not fully extend children's growing understanding of people, families and communities beyond their own.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 improve opportunities to further develop children's understanding that print conveys meaning  enhance opportunities that strengthen children's understanding of different people, communities and the wider world.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors, and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector completed a joint observation with the childminder.  The inspector looked at relevant documentation, such as, the childminder's self- evaluation, policies and procedures, and children's online records.  The inspector read statements from parents and took account of the views provided.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder has a good understanding of child protection issues and the procedures to follow should she have any concerns. She helps children to stay safe by reviewing risks in the environment and when on outings. The childminder reflects on her practice. Generally, she evaluates what is working well and what she wants to improve. The childminder's continuous professional development is maintained by attending training courses, reading early years articles and through online forums. This has had a positive impact on her practice. The childminder uses a range of ways to exchange information with parents. She uses her good partnerships with parents to plan smooth transitions into her home, supporting continuity in children's care and learning.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The quality of teaching is strong. The childminder uses her knowledge of child development and her excellent understanding of how children learn, to provide a stimulating range of activities that they all enjoy. Young children enjoy exploring the modelling dough to create monsters and snowmen. The childminder models language well by introducing and reinforcing words linked to the children's knowledge of themselves. For example, she asks them questions, such as, 'What do use to hear with?' Children listen to each other's views and play well together. The childminder gains an understanding of the children's abilities and their next steps through assessments of their learning and development. She observes children and plans detailed learning experiences that meet their individual needs. The childminder monitors children's progress closely so that any gaps in their learning are quickly identified and shared with their parents.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children are happy, confident and relaxed in the childminder's home. They play well together and their behaviour is good. The childminder supports children well to develop the skills they need to adopt a healthy lifestyle. She encourages healthy snacks and lunchtime meals, and children follow good hygiene routines throughout the day. The childminder ensures that children have daily access to the fresh air and exercise. They have use of a safe and secure outdoor play area, and enjoy visits to the local parks to help develop their physical skills.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are provided with good opportunities to help them make progress in their learning and development. They are motivated to learn and gain good life skills ready for starting school.
