Her effective teaching supports children in making good progress in their learning and development.  Partnerships with parents are good. Parents share positive views about the provision. They comment on the close bond that the childminder has with their children and the variety of activities available indoors and outdoors.  The childminder gathers meaningful information from parents about what children can do when they start. She ensures that her settling-in arrangements are flexible and meet children's individual needs.  Children are independent and confident to explore the safe and welcoming environment. A varied range of resources is accessible to children. They keenly select what they want to play with, developing their independence.

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 provide more challenge for children to extend and build upon their spontaneous learning during self-chosen play.

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and outdoors, and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector spoke with the childminder at appropriate times throughout the inspection.  The inspector looked at records of children's learning and a selection of policies and other records.  The inspector observed a planned activity and jointly evaluated this with the childminder.  The inspector checked evidence of the suitability of all household members, qualifications of the childminder and the childminder's self-evaluation form.  The inspector took account of responses from parents in written documentation.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder has a secure understanding of the procedure to follow if she has concerns about children's welfare. Policies and procedures underpin the childminder's good practice to help keep children safe and to promote their well-being. The childminder is very proactive in the way she supports children to learn about their own safety, and takes effective action to minimise any hazards. This helps her to care for children in a safe and secure environment. The childminder maintains a programme of professional development. She has undertaken relevant training and has future plans for increasing her level of qualification.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder has a good understanding of how children learn through play. She carefully observes children and gets to know them well. She accurately assesses their stages of development and plans ways to help them make progress. The quality of her teaching is good overall. She skilfully weaves in opportunities during planned activities to promote children's early mathematical skills. For example, she models counting and encourages children to count and to say what number comes next. She talks with them about size, length and shape. Children enjoy sorting and identifying shapes as they thread them onto varying lengths of string. Children have opportunities to listen to stories and enjoy joining in with repeated phrases. They play imaginatively, based on their own experiences.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children enjoy nutritious, freshly prepared meals which the childminder provides. They build their understanding of a healthy diet and develop a wide variety of tastes. Children confidently help to prepare their own snacks. Close supervision from the childminder helps children learn how to keep themselves safe when using knives. Children enjoy feeding the birds and splashing in puddles in the outdoor area. Regular visits to the riverside and local park enable the children to run freely and use large equipment to help develop their physical skills. Children learn how to be responsible as they help tidy up. They behave well as they are encouraged to share resources and wait their turn during activities. The childminder regularly praises children for their achievements. This enhances their self- esteem and gives them confidence in their abilities.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make consistently good progress in all areas of learning. They enjoy learning through varied and stimulating play activities. Children develop a good foundation to support their future learning. They are prepared well for the move on to school or nursery.
