This provision is good

 The childminder has a good knowledge of how children learn. She provides warm and welcoming environments for the children in her care. The children have close relationships with the childminder, which effectively supports their learning and well- being.  The childminder provides a good range of activities and experiences that help children learn about their community and the wider society.  The childminder is a good role model. She manages children's behaviour effectively, according to each child's development, and teaches children to respect others.  The childminder establishes good partnerships with parents; regular two-way communication helps parents to be involved in their children's learning.  Well-established relationships between the childminder and the local nursery school help smooth the transfer process when children leave the childminder to move on.  The childminder evaluates her practice to make worthwhile improvements and ensure

positive outcomes for children's learning.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not always extend children's learning fully by sustaining their interest in exploring and experimenting with different sorts of materials, such as through using all of their senses, to get the most from the activities and resources.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 provide every opportunity for children to explore a rich range of materials as thoroughly as possible.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching during indoor and outdoor activities and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector observed the children engaged in activities and the childminder's interaction with them.  The inspector sampled documentation, including the children's learning records and the childminder's risk assessments, policies and procedures.  The inspector undertook a joint observation with the childminder.  The inspector toured the setting and viewed the areas used for childminding purposes.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder is fully aware of her responsibilities and the procedures to follow should she have a concern about a child in her care. The childminder undertakes effective risk assessments to help children explore and play safely on her premises and on outings. The childminder evaluates her practice well, and she has addressed the recommendations from the last inspection. She has fully developed her observation and assessment methods to identify pertinent learning experiences. The changes made have helped to sustain her good level of service. The childminder regularly meets with other childminders to update her knowledge and gain fresh ideas to use with the children. She works effectively with staff from the local nursery to promote a joint approach to children's care and learning.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder provides children with a wide range of interesting activities and experiences which she plans based on her careful observations of their needs and interests. Children show a great interest in role play and the childminder supports their learning effectively. For example, children take on roles to care for their 'sick dolly' and are keen to involve the childminder in their play. Children develop their early social skills well, such as when they meet with other children in their local community. The childminder promotes children's imaginative and early language skills effectively. For example, she listens to children retelling one of their favourite stories, as they act out the scenes about the three bears, extending children's vocabularies as they do so.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children are happy and settled in the childminder's care. They share close relationships with her and with each other. Children choose what to do from a stimulating range of toys and resources independently. They enjoy their learning. The childminder is vigilant in supervising children as they play. Children learn about keeping themselves safe effectively, such as with regard to road safety when on walks. Children learn about healthy lifestyles well. They follow good hygiene routines, and enjoy nutritious snacks which meet their individual dietary requirements well. Children respond well to praise, which helps build their self-esteem.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children have high levels of self-control and confidence during activities. Children show readiness for the next stages in their development and their move to school.
