This provision is good

 Children have strong bonds with the childminder, who reassures and comforts them. Children build positive relationships, show concern for their friends and help them with tasks.  Observations, planning and assessments are good and promote high achievements. The childminder's good knowledge of children's individual needs helps her plan for their next steps. Children make good progress from their starting points.  The childminder works well with parents and actively encourages them to share information about children's starting points and learning at home. She provides ideas for activities for parents to help their children's learning further.  The childminder and assistant promote good hygienic practices and provide children with good explanations to help their understanding further.  The childminder and assistant evaluate the provision well to create action plans for targeted improvement. For example, they have recently reorganised the abundant

range of high-quality resources so that children have more independent choice.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not always ensure children have a clear space to explore and investigate thoroughly in their play.  The childminder does not make the best use of space to support children in developing their early reading skills.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 provide a consistently clear play space for children to explore and investigate freely  develop further opportunities for children to extend their early reading skills.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed activities and the childminder's interactions with children inside.  The inspector spoke with the childminder and children at convenient times during the inspection.  The inspector sampled a range of documentation including children's learning records, the childminder's self-evaluation and her policies and procedures.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder and her assistant attend regular child protection training and have a good understanding of the procedure to follow should a child be at risk of harm. The childminder has taken positive steps since her last inspection to address weaknesses in her practice. For example, she has assessed risk to the children and removed the trampoline from the garden. There are effective arrangements to ensure the suitability of the assistant. Regular support meetings with her and ongoing professional development enable the childminder to promote consistency in the good quality of teaching. The childminder monitors children's progress effectively.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder uses her experience and training well to plan a varied range of activities to motivate children's learning. Children show curiosity at how things work and follow instructions well, for example, to operate the interactive train. The childminder supports children's communication and language skills effectively. Her successful questioning encourages children to think, process ideas and think of solutions. The childminder uses her training very well to encourage children to be imaginative and create freely. Children choose which colour paint they would like, squeeze the bottle and mix them together on their tray, showing good small muscle skills. Some children have collected stones on a recent outing and paint these enthusiastically. Children keenly sing and make choices about which songs to sing. The childminder helps children understand the effects that exercise has had on their bodies well and the importance of having a drink.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder provides a warm and welcoming environment where children have a strong sense of belonging. For example, the childminder celebrates weekly achievements and children have a designated peg to store their personal possessions. Children behave well and show kindness to their friends. Children learn good independent skills for their future learning. For example, they help to cut the malt loaf and spread their own butter at snack time, learning how to keep safe and healthy. Children have good opportunities to be outside and active. The childminder motivates children's curiosity in nature well. She has created a bug hotel for children to explore using a range of equipment.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

All children make good progress in their learning from their starting points. They develop good communication skills and confidently ask questions in readiness for their future learning and eventual move to school.
