This provision is good
The childminder has a good understanding of her role and responsibility as a childminder and is very effective in making continuous improvements for the benefit of children. The childminder is skilled at balancing adult-led and child-led activities, and judging when to adapt an activity to provide further challenge and enjoyment. Children have a very strong bond with the childminder and are clearly secure and confident in her care. Children's emotional well-being is good. Children make steady sustained progress in the childminder's care. The childminder has built strong partnerships with other settings who care for minded children, such as pre-schools and schools. She shares relevant information to provide very consistent care.
p.1
It is not yet outstanding because:
There are fewer opportunities for children who learn better outdoors to learn about the natural world or to gain an understanding of literacy. The childminder does not provide a full range of different media and materials for babies and children to explore. This has a minor impact on children's developing understanding of the world around them.
p.1
What the setting needs to do to improve further
To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:
p.2

p.2
Inspection activities
The inspector observed children at play in the childminder's home. The inspector examined a range of documents, including risk assessments and children's records. The inspector and childminder discussed the morning's activities and the children's learning. The inspector read letters from parents to gather their views.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
Safeguarding is effective. The childminder updates her safeguarding knowledge regularly and knows what action to take should she have any concerns about the welfare of a child. The childminder has a good system for self-evaluation. She reflects on different aspects of her provision and has a strong awareness of her strengths and areas for improvement. The childminder takes robust action to enhance her provision for the benefit of children. For example, she refined her assessment processes to make them show progress more precisely and to enable her to monitor children more closely. The childminder attends regular training and professional development opportunities. She puts into practice what she learns, such as refining how she prepares children for school.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder has very strong partnerships with parents. She works closely with them from the start with regular exchanges of information about their children's abilities, progress and interests. The childminder adapts her learning environment to suit each child and reshapes activities to meet their individual learning needs. She has a good understanding of how to make activities challenging across all areas of children's learning. The childminder plays alongside children and talks with them as they play, teaching specific skills or judging when to let them take the lead. Children enjoy a wide range of outings in the local community. They learn about a broad variety of cultures to encourage their understanding of diversity and how different people live.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
Children are independent and enjoy exploring the childminder's playroom, deciding what to play and making their own choices. They demonstrate a good level of confidence and self-motivation as they investigate what toys can do and try new things. Children's physical well-being is strong. The childminder is very attentive to the care needs of babies and follows their individual routines closely to help them feel secure. Children learn about a healthy lifestyle. She provides healthy snacks and meals for all children and makes sure they have regular physical exercise. The childminder has clear rules for children's behaviour and safety. She teaches children how to handle toys and small tools safely. For example, children learn to cut fruit at snack time. Children learn about turn-taking and cooperative play as part of different games and activities. They respond well to what the childminder says. They behave well.
p.3
