This provision is good

 The childminder promotes the development of children's language and communication skills effectively. She interacts with children well and talks at appropriate times, for example, to extend their vocabulary. Children make good progress in their learning from their starting points and are prepared well for school.  The childminder provides an environment that is safe, welcoming and supports children's all-round development, including their understanding of being healthy.  The childminder keeps her policies and procedures up to date, and uses them effectively to provide a good-quality provision.  Overall, the quality of teaching is good. The childminder uses information from observations and assessments effectively to plan for children's next steps in learning.  The childminder builds good partnerships with parents. She shares information effectively to promote continuity of children's care and learning.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder misses opportunities to help children build on their interests and make choices about their play.  Children do not always have the chance to extend their understanding of individual differences in society.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 improve opportunities for children to make more choices about their own play and build on their interests  develop further ways to extend children's knowledge and understanding of individual differences in the wider world.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector took account of parents' views through questionnaires made available during the inspection.  The inspector carried out a joint observation with the childminder.  The inspector observed the childminder and her interactions with children during play inside and outdoors.  The inspector sampled documentation, including confirmation of suitability, together with policies and procedures.  The inspector talked with the children and childminder at appropriate times during the inspection.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The childminder keeps up to date with changes in legislation and the requirements. She improves her knowledge and skills to benefit children and their families. For example, she attends a fortnightly childminding group, sharing effective practice ideas, which has had a positive impact on children's outcomes. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a good understanding of child protection issues and knows the procedures to follow should she have a concern about a child. The childminder reflects on the quality of her practice and provision to identify and target areas for improvement. The childminder involves parents in their children's learning well. For example, she shares children's achievements at the setting and gives parents ideas about how to extend children's learning at home. Parents comment that they are very happy with the service that she provides. They praise her kind and caring manner, and are pleased with the progress their children make.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder gains information from parents when children first start to inform planning from the outset. She observes children to identify their interests and achievements. She monitors their progress to help identify and plan for any gaps in their learning. The childminder promotes children's listening and attention skills well. For example, she uses puppets to engage them during story time. She extends children's understanding of stories and encourages their imagination, for example by providing props for them to re-enact a story about visiting the moon in a rocket. Children enjoy painting, developing their small-muscle skills and creativity.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder provides a welcoming environment for children to play. She builds secure emotional attachments with children, who enjoy frequent cuddles. Children learn to become confident and develop their self-care skills, such as helping the childminder to prepare snacks by cutting up fruit. Children learn about healthy lifestyles. For example, they enjoy healthy snack choices and have daily opportunities to be physically active on planned trips or in the garden. The childminder is a positive role model to children. Children behave well; they respect their friends and learn to share. Older children show care and consideration towards the younger ones.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress across all areas of their learning and development. They show confidence and self-assurance. They gain essential skills to help prepare them for their move on to school.
