This provision is good

 The quality of teaching is good. The childminder knows the children well. She plans and provides a good range of activities to help them progress effectively with their development.  Children are happy, self-assured and clearly feel secure in the childminder's care. They confidently access resources and explore the environment safely and freely.  Children behave well and have close relationships with others. The childminder provides children with lots of praise and encouragement, which promotes their self-confidence and emotional development.  Partnerships with parents are good. The childminder maintains a good two-way flow of information to promote a positive continuity of care.  The childminder shows a strong drive to improve. She completes detailed self- evaluations and takes account of parents' views to help her develop. The childminder effectively addressed her previous recommendations.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 Children do not always have the best possible opportunities to explore a wide range of objects and materials, some of which may be familiar to them from home.  On occasions, the childminder does not always extend children's mathematical knowledge to develop their awareness of shapes.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 increase opportunities for children to explore and play with a wider range of different objects and materials  provide more learning experiences for children to learn about shapes, to build on their mathematical knowledge.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed children in areas of the home used for minding.  The inspector spoke with the childminder at appropriate times throughout the inspection.  The inspector took into consideration the views of parents from the references and parental questionnaires available.  The inspector spoke to children and interacted in their play.  The inspector sampled children's development files, planning, policies and procedures.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The childminder has a strong understanding of how to promote children's learning and welfare. She frequently reflects on her work and highlights strengths and areas for future development. She regularly seeks out training to keep her knowledge up to date. For example, she has recently completed a course to help her support children's language and listening skills more effectively. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a secure awareness of her role and responsibilities to help protect children from harm. She is fully aware of the importance of working together with others to promote children's care and welfare. Parents are positive in their feedback about the childminder's practice.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

Children are well occupied and entertained during their time with the childminder. They become engrossed in the activities and play with confidence. Children have a good amount of individual learning support during a positive balance of adult-planned and child- chosen activities. The childminder observes and reviews children's development effectivity. This helps her identify any areas where children are falling behind so that she can obtain support when needed. Children happily explore and play with creative materials. For example, dried cereals were used to aid children's imagination as they played with the toy tea sets. Children enjoy listening to stories and drawing pictures. This helps their literacy development. The childminder skilfully incorporates new vocabulary as children talk and play by introducing mathematical language. Children's physical skills develop well, for example, as they walk about in the local community and use outdoor play equipment

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children are caring and considerate to each other. They play well together and clearly enjoy their friends' company, as they share toys and are polite. Children form secure relationships with the childminder, which help them to feel safe. They develop a good awareness of how to play safely, as the childminder talks to them about how they can remain safe. For example, they talk about the consequences of their actions, such as why they should not jump on steps and they regularly practice emergency evacuation drills. Children gain a good understanding of healthy lifestyles. They play in an extremely clean and comfortable environment and learn effective hygiene routines, such as washing hands before eating.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children develop a good range of skills that help them to develop and be prepared for their next stage in learning, such as school. They make good progress.
