This provision is good

 The qualified and experienced childminder has an enthusiastic commitment to professional development. This helps her to expand her knowledge and keep up to date with changes to best practice.  The partnerships with parents are good. The childminder shares information effectively with parents and updates them often on their children's progress and well-being.  Children develop close relationships with the childminder. They enjoy her company and confidently look to her for affectionate support.  The childminder offers children stimulating outdoor play experiences every day. Children explore her well-planted garden and they go to local woods to learn about nature and the world around them.  The childminder involves children of all ages in social activities and encourages sharing and turn taking. She teaches children good manners and they behave well, helping to prepare them for the next stage in their learning.

p.1

This provision is good

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 provide children with greater opportunities to express their ideas and follow their interests.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector looked at the areas of the childminder's home used by children and observed children at play.  The inspector observed the childminder carrying out a planned activity with children and evaluated the teaching and learning with her.  Relevant documentation was checked, including the childminder's self-evaluation and training programme, evidence of suitability of family members and some policies and procedures.  The inspector took account of the views of parents through survey forms and comments in children's records.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder regularly attends child protection training. She recognises the signs of abuse or neglect and has a good understanding of the procedures for reporting any concerns about children's welfare. Children learn about safety in practical ways as, for example, they learn to cross roads on their way to and from school. The childminder consults parents and children about the quality of her childminding service. She evaluates children's activities and has clear action plans that enable her to improve. The childminder works well with other local settings, including the school, to promote a joint approach to children's care and learning.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder knows children well and understands their individual learning needs. She thoroughly supports their developing language skills, for example, by talking to them and teaching them new words. Children enjoy story times and readily access a broad range of books. Resources are arranged so that children can make choices freely. They choose their favourite toy cars and trains and play happily alongside each other. The childminder's enthusiasm is infectious. Children become engaged in their activities and respond eagerly to her suggestions. The childminder makes ongoing assessments of children's progress so she understands their next steps in learning. These are shared with parents so that they can support their children's learning at home.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder offers parents flexible settling-in visits and gathers comprehensive information from them about children's individual needs. This helps children to settle quickly and be confident in the childminder's care. The childminder teaches children about healthy foods and provides varied, nutritious snacks. Children develop an understanding of other people's lifestyles through social interactions with others, books and discussions. They learn about festivals and special events from their own and other cultures. The childminder teaches children about nature as, for example, they dig for worms in the garden.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

The childminder effectively helps children to prepare for school. She teaches them practical skills, such as putting on their own wellington boots, or blowing their noses. Regular visits to the local school gives children confidence. Overall, children make good progress in their learning.
