This provision is good

 The experienced childminder and her qualified assistant work closely together to help children to learn through activities and experiences that they enjoy. Children benefit from very well-organised play space and easy access to a wide range of resources.  The childminder and her assistant are sensitive and affectionate. Children quickly settle and help form warm and positive relationships with adults and each other. Children behave well and they are considerate towards others.  Children are developing good language skills. They speak with confidence, as seen in the quality of their conversations with each other and the adults.  The childminder works very closely with parents. She provides them with regular updates about their children's learning and development. Parents provide very positive feedback, showing how happy they are with the care and education of their children.  The childminder and her assistant continue to improve their knowledge and skills. They

evaluate activities and plan for improvements, helping them to develop positive outcomes for children's learning.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 Children do not always have enough opportunities to access materials to fully develop their early writing skills.  There are missed opportunities for children to learn about people in the wider community, to develop their awareness of diversity.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

 ensure children have enough opportunities to develop their early writing skills  help children gain a greater understanding of the diversity of people in the wider community.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector looked at the areas of the home used for childminding.  The inspector observed the childminder and assistant playing with the children during a range of activities.  The inspector reviewed the childminder's policies, looked at children's records and checked evidence of the suitability and qualifications of the childminder and assistant.  The inspector discussed activities and children's learning with the childminder.  The inspector took account of the views of parents expressed in their written responses.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has made certain her assistant fully understands her roles and responsibilities and they have both have recently refreshed their safeguarding training. They fully understand the procedures to follow should they have any concerns about a child's welfare. The childminder checks all play areas for hazards effectively, and minimises risks to ensure children play and learn in a safe environment. The childminder works well with other settings that the children attend. She uses this information effectively to support her planning and to help her provide consistently appropriate activities to foster the children's good progress.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder and her assistant have a good understanding of how children learn and develop. Children engage in an interesting range and good balance of activities that are appropriate for their ages and abilities. For example, children clearly delighted in sharing stories about their personal treasures in a group activity, having taken turns in bringing in their treasures from home. Older children enthusiastically choose to play listening activities, listening quietly to each sound and confidently identifying them while thoroughly enjoying their achievements. Younger children, while sharing their books with the assistant, showed they were able to identify the different shapes in the story. At lunchtime all children are able to identify their names to find their seat at the table.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children clearly demonstrate they feel safe; they have a strong sense of belonging and are confident in their own abilities. Children are eager to independently play and explore. The children learn how to manage their personal needs well. For example, they confidently pour their own drinks and cut up the fruit for their snacks. The childminder and her assistant help children understand the importance of how to keep themselves safe. Gentle reminders help them to take care when moving and not to run indoors. Regular walks to school and the local parks and outdoor areas, for example, help children to enjoy physical outdoor play.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

All children make good progress. They are active learners who, overall, obtain the skills needed for their next stages in learning and their eventual move to school.
