to promote children's respect for, and awareness of, different people in the community.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder has not fully explored all ways to gather feedback from parents about the quality of her provision and how it can be improved further.  The childminder does not always develop children's awareness of the environment to fully promote their awareness of the world around them.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

 enhance self-evaluation processes to involve parents more fully  develop further ways to enhance children's awareness of the local environment.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector spoke with the childminder and children at appropriate times during the inspection.  The inspector observed planned play activities and daily routines.  The inspector sampled documentation, including children's development folders, the childminder's qualification certificates and daily records.  The inspector toured the areas of the childminder's home used for childminding.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder keeps up to date with current legislation. She has a thorough knowledge of the signs when a child may be at risk of harm and understands the procedures to follow if she has concerns about a child's welfare. The childminder provides regular information for parents to keep them involved in their children's development. For example, she uses information from children's activities at home and at other settings to provide experiences that complement and extend their learning. The childminder uses a range of methods to review her practice; for example, she liaises with the advisor from the local authority.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder's teaching is effective. For example, she demonstrates and explains how things work to enhance children's understanding. The childminder promotes all children's language skills, including those children who are learning to speak English as an additional language. For example, she names different items as children play, and repeats favourite words and sounds. The childminder has a good knowledge of the areas of learning and how children learn. She makes careful observations of children's play when they first start. This helps her to understand their interests and how they like to learn. For example, young children are fascinated with water play, using different sized containers to pour and splash, so the childminder plans for further related activities to extend their learning.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder's caring and gentle approach helps children to make secure attachments. She gathers detailed information from parents before children start and uses this to plan familiar care routines for children. Children learn to manage small tasks well. For example, they take an active part in snack time by pouring their own drinks. The childminder teaches children to consider their own safety. For example, younger children learn to sit carefully on small chairs and older children learn how to cross the road safely. Children have many opportunities to develop their physical skills. For example, they balance on small stepping stones and use apparatus to climb.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

All children are confident and active learners. They make good progress from their starting points. The childminder plans well for the next steps in all children's learning to help them prepare for the future.
