p.2
Inspection activities
The inspector completed observations of the children engaged in activities with the childminder. The inspector sampled documents that the childminder uses to support her practice. The inspector viewed the rooms and resources used by children. The inspector and childminder discussed the systems used to monitor the children's progress.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management requires improvement
Safeguarding is effective. The childminder understands how to keep children safe. She is fully aware of child protection issues and knows what to do should she have any concerns about a child in her care. The childminder implements effective risk assessments to ensure she addresses potential hazards so that children play in a safe environment. The childminder has positive relationships with parents and speaks with them daily to ensure she is providing continuity for children. The childminder seeks advice and training to help her review her practice, identify areas for improvement and develop her teaching skills. This has helped her to complete the required progress checks for children. However, the childminder misses opportunities to promote learning well.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement
The childminder provides a secure base for children to explore the range of resources and activities on offer. Children count with the childminder as they put together a number puzzle, and they enjoy climbing and balancing over a 'soft-play' assault course. The childminder observes children and makes appropriate assessments of their learning. However, she does not always use these to plan activities that challenge children and enable them to develop their own play ideas. Additionally, the childminder does not always consider how she can support children who enjoy learning outdoors most effectively. The childminder shares information with parents about their children's development and works closely with them so that they can support their learning at home.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
Children build secure emotional attachments with the childminder and demonstrate that they feel safe in her care. She knows the children well and how she can best support their care needs. The childminder promotes children's emotional and physical well-being successfully. She teaches children about being kind to others and respecting one another's differences. She encourages children to take responsibility and manage their personal care and hygiene well. For example, children understand when to tidy away and when they need to wash their hands. The childminder promotes children's physical skills well.
p.3
Outcomes for children require improvement
Although children make adequate progress in relation to their starting points, progress is not yet good. Children learn to count but have fewer opportunities to learn about shape and measurement. Nevertheless, children develop confidence, learn to socialise, take turns and be considerate of one another. This helps to prepare them for school.
