children and young people since the most recent full inspection
The home is going from strength to strength. It makes a real difference to the lives of children and young people using the service, helping them to enjoy good quality care and have positive experiences during their time here. The support and interventions that staff provide for families is proving highly effective. This is significantly reducing the numbers of children and young people who need to come into the care of the trust. Since the last inspection, staff have continued to extend their repertoire of skills through highly relevant training opportunities, mutual support and strong partnership working. This has included training on attachment and child sexual exploitation (CSE), increased liaison with psychologists and developing links to a domestic violence project. Missing from home incidents are rare and the risks around this are well managed. Partnership working with CSE police officers also continues to be effective. Staff

are alert to any child protection concerns that may arise when working with families. These actions combine to make children and young people safer. Overall, the behaviour of children and young people is managed well with rarely the need for restraint. Children and young people who receive the 'edge of care' service receive good support for their lives to continue as normally as possible. For example, the home liaised closely with counselling services so that appointments would not cause educational disruption for one young person. Children and young people who become looked after receive excellent support with the transition to residential or foster care placements. Their health, education and emotional health needs are well met. This is because there is a good base line assessment of their needs and a clear understanding by everyone of what needs to change. Leadership and management remains strong and clearly drives forward

improvement in the service. There is a culture of reflective practice so that the staff team learn from where things have not gone so well. The whole team works efficiently and effectively. As staff become more confident in their role, the manager is able to reduce staffing ratios. This allows for a greater number of referrals to be considered. Recommendations to amend the statement of purpose and more closely link interventions with care planning objectives have been met.

Information about this inspection
Inspectors have looked closely at the experiences and progress of children and young people living in the children's home. Inspectors considered the quality of work and the difference adults make to the lives of children and young people. They read case files, watched how professional staff work with children, young people and each other and discussed the effectiveness of help and care given to children and young people. Wherever possible, they talked to children, young people and their families. In addition the inspectors have tried to understand what the children's home knows about how well it is performing, how well it is doing and what difference it is making for the children and young people who it is trying to help, protect and look after. This inspection focused on the effectiveness of the home and the progress and experiences of children and young people since the most recent full inspection.
