This provision is good

 The childminder effectively plans for children's individual learning and closely assesses and checks their good progress. Her assessment systems help her to intervene if she identifies any gaps in children's learning.  To successfully extend children's learning and play experiences, the childminder uses good teaching methods. She uses a variety of ways to help children solve simple problems, learn new words, and become independent in their learning.  The childminder works very closely with parents and other people involved in the children's lives, such as school teachers, to further complement their learning and prepare them for school.  The childminder places strong emphasis on keeping children safe from harm. She helps them to learn about keeping themselves safe, for example, as they cross the road. Children feel secure and behave well as they are clear on what is expected of them.  The enthusiastic childminder accurately reflects on her practice and values the views of

children and parents to help her plan the development of her service.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not always fully extend children's listening or attention skills.  Children are not always confident to talk about themselves and people that are important to them or the wider world around them.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 explore further ways to encourage children's interest in their learning and in developing their attention skills  help children to develop their understanding of their families and the world around them.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed activities in the childminder's home.  The inspector spoke with the childminder and children at appropriate times throughout the inspection.  The inspector looked at children's records and planning, and discussed the childminder's policies and procedures.  The inspector took account of the written views of parents.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The childminder is committed to her ongoing professional development and she puts the children at the heart of her provision. She attends various training courses, reads articles, and attends local childminding meetings to build on her existing good knowledge and skills. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a good knowledge of child protection issues and procedures to follow should she have concerns. Partnerships with parents and other providers are good and effective two-way communication keeps everyone up to date about children's individual needs. Parents speak highly of the childminding service they receive.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder has good knowledge and understanding of how to help children reach the early learning goals. She plans activities from the children's interests and is quick to follow their lead. The childminder is effective in helping children to extend their speaking and listening skills. Children have many good opportunities to develop mathematical skills as they learn about colour, shape, size and measurement. They are creative and use their imaginations as they join in art and craft activities, and action songs. Children find out about living things as, for example, they feed the chickens and plant seeds. They practise early writing and reading skills as they write shopping lists and recognise their name.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Parents are encouraged to share what they know about their child from the start and, therefore, the childminder effectively meets children's individual needs. Children have very close relationships with the caring childminder. Children learn right from wrong as the childminder handles any minor behaviour issues very sensitively and appropriately for children's level of understanding. They are taught good manners and socialise with other children at pre-school groups. Children learn to be independent as they begin to dress and undress themselves. Children eat healthy foods, follow good hygiene practices and enjoy plenty of exercise in the open air. Children make good progress in their physical development, for example, as they climb and slide, ride trikes and play ball games.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress towards the early learning goals. The childminder helps children to gain necessary skills in most areas of their learning. They develop good levels of independence, helping their preparation for moving on to school.
