This provision is good

 The childminder skilfully extends children's early language development. They engage confidently in discussions and express themselves clearly during their play, knowing their contributions will be listened to and valued by the childminder.  Children are happy and settle very well in the childminder's welcoming home. The childminder promotes their independence well; for example, children enjoy the routines and the choices they have in their activities.  The childminder is proactive in gaining new skills and regularly seeks feedback from parents to help her improve outcomes for children.  Children make good progress in their learning. The childminder provides a broad range of activities in her home and takes children on many outings.  Children gain a good awareness of how to keep themselves and their friends safe and healthy. For example, they select and help prepare fresh fruit for their snacks.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not always monitor children's progress in all areas of learning in enough detail to identify their next steps in learning.  The childminder sometimes misses opportunities to extend children's early writing skills during their play and activities.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 strengthen ways to monitor children's progress in all areas of learning  provide more opportunities for children to extend their early literacy skills, particularly in relation to writing.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed activities in the childminder's home.  The inspector spoke to the childminder and children at appropriate times during the inspection.  The inspector looked at children's records, planning documentation and a sample of other documentation, including policies and procedures.  The inspector took account of the childminder's self-evaluation and written feedback from parents.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The childminder constantly strives to improve her practice. For example, she links with other professionals to help her better meet the needs of individual children and narrow any gaps in their learning. Parents comment positively about the provision and how their children are very happy and developing well with the caring childminder. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a secure understanding of how to recognise if a child may be at risk of harm. She knows the procedure to follow if she has any concerns about a child's welfare, to help keep them safe. The childminder establishes good partnerships with parents to promote consistency for children. For example, she seeks information from parents to help her identify starting points and children's learning needs, and frequently shares information with them about children's ongoing development.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder adapts her interactions well to suit children's individual learning styles and needs. For example, during the inspection, she provided simple inset puzzles and more complex shape puzzles relating to a favourite book. Children are keen to explore and through the childminder's sensitive encouragement and support they are willing to try out their ideas. Children develop good social skills and learn to value and respect each other. For example, they regularly visit local places of interest and attend toddler groups where they develop friendships and learn to play together. Children show a confident understanding of how to use books, such as using the pictures in a book to tell a story back to the childminder.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children are polite, considerate and well behaved, and they like to be helpful to each other. The childminder establishes clear boundaries and expectations, which help children to feel safe and secure. Children settle well with the childminder as they feel valued and included. For example, she displays photographs of children and their families for them to talk about. The childminder gains detailed information from parents about each child's unique requirements and follows individual routines closely. Children receive lots of praise and encouragement, which help them to feel proud. For example, the childminder thanks them for helping each other.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress in their learning and development. They are keen to participate in activities as these closely reflect their interests and learning needs. They are well prepared for the next stage in their learning.
