Inspection activities
The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and assessed the impact this has on children's learning. The inspector discussed the outcome of children's involvement in the activities on the day with the childminder. The inspector spoke to the childminder at appropriate times throughout the inspection. She looked at relevant documentation, including evidence of the suitability of those living on the premises. The inspector spoke to a small selection of parents during the inspection and sampled written comments from other parents and took account of their views.
p.2

The childminder has clear policies and procedures. These, along with well-maintained documentation, underpin the efficient management of her setting. The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder has a good understanding of how to keep children safe in her care. She knows the possible signs of abuse or neglect. She understands what to do should she have a concern about the welfare of a child in her care. She is fully aware of all new legislation and requirements. The childminder is committed to improving her practice and the quality of her teaching. She attends ongoing training to enhance her skills and knowledge. She regularly discusses what constitutes good practice and shares ideas for activities with other childminders.

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

She completes termly summaries of children's progress which help her identify any gaps in children's learning and take swift action to close these. The childminder is a good role model for children's learning. She spends good quality time supporting children as they play. She engages them in conversation and listens with interest to what they have to say. She introduces children to new vocabulary and praises their efforts when they have a go at saying more complex words. The childminder skilfully teaches children about mathematical concepts, such as weight and measure during planned activities. Children show sustained concentration and good levels of motivation during activities, such as baking. They carefully find the ingredients they need using a picture recipe card. They show an interest

in using scales to weigh the ingredients and make a good attempt to crack the eggs into their bowl. Children use spoons with good control as they stir the mixture. They delight in what they have achieved when their cake is cooked.
p.3

The childminder creates an inclusive learning environment for children. Children move about confidently and choose what they want to play with. They play well together and willingly help each other during activities, demonstrating a very caring attitude. Children feel at home and are emotionally secure. The childminder successfully supports children's good health. They benefit from a wide range of robust outdoor activities, both in the garden and nearby woodland. These activities help children to develop good physical skills and also ignite their curiosity and interest. Children enjoy building dens and learning about nature and wildlife, such as hedgehogs. Children fully understand the importance of washing their hands and cleaning their teeth as part of a healthy lifestyle.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
All children make good progress from their starting points and are well prepared for school when the time comes. They are confident, demonstrate good social skills and are able to express their own thoughts and ideas.
