This provision is good
The quality of teaching is good. The childminder has a good knowledge of children she cares for and a secure understanding of how they learn. This contributes to the good progress children make in relation to their starting points. The childminder and her assistant carefully track the progress children make. This helps the childminder to ensure any gaps in children's learning are quickly identified so she can provide any additional support needed. The childminder provides a bright, welcoming and homely environment. Children have established warm and secure bonds with her. Children have a strong sense of security and belonging because the childminder meets their individual needs very well. Partnerships with parents are good. They are kept well informed about their child's day and the progress they are making in their development. Parents' comments about the service are very complimentary and show they have faith and trust in the childminder.

This provision is good
The childminder makes good use of training opportunities to update her knowledge. This enhances the quality of her provision.
p.1
It is not yet outstanding because:
The childminder does not always wait for children to respond when asking them questions. The childminder occasionally misses opportunities to help develop children's understanding of shape, colour, size and number.

Inspection activities
The inspector observed the childminder's practice and her engagement with children throughout the inspection. The inspector held discussions and conducted a joint observation with the childminder. The inspector checked evidence of the suitability of all adults living and working on the premises. She also looked at evidence of the qualifications and recent training completed by the childminder and her assistant. The inspector viewed children's files and assessment records, relevant policies, procedures and health and safety documents. The inspector took account of the written views of parents.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder is aware of the signs and symptoms of abuse and neglect. She knows the correct reporting procedures if she has concerns about a child's welfare. The childminder has thorough procedures in place to ensure the suitability of her assistant and to build on her teaching practice. The childminder has a good capacity to improve her provision further. She has clear plans for the future and is committed to her own professional development and that of her assistant. The childminder uses her qualifications well to monitor children's learning and seeks advice from other early years professionals where needed. This enables her to take prompt action when additional support is required.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder regularly observes children to recognise their achievements and identify their next steps in learning. She identifies and takes swift action to close any gaps in children's development. She carefully plans a range of interesting activities, covering all areas of learning. This helps children become motivated learners who make good progress. The childminder skilfully gives children time to explore and develop their own ideas. Young children become fully engrossed as they explore the properties of dough. They show good control of their small muscles as they press, squeeze, poke and make marks with small tools. Children show good creativity as they extend the activity by adding pompoms and shaped cutters to make dough pictures. The childminder demonstrates how to do things and provides guidance to extend children's ideas during activities, such as role play. Children giggle and become very excited as the childminder introduces balls into

the tent where they are hiding. Children are active and happy learners.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
The childminder knows children well. Settling-in sessions are used effectively to ensure there is a smooth move from home to her setting. The childminder works with parents during this time, to ensure children have familiar experiences and that she understands children's routines to enable her to meet their needs. The childminder provides children with a wide range of activities and learning experiences. This includes visits and outings in the local community and further afield. The childminder encourages children to adopt healthy lifestyles. Children enjoy healthy and nutritious snacks and they have access to plenty of fresh air and exercise. The childminder sensitively and calmly discusses expected behaviours with children. Children adapt their behaviour accordingly and behave very well. Children show high levels of curiosity as they fully explore the well-organised toys and activities.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children make good progress in their learning and development. They are developing the skills they need for the next stage in their learning. The childminder takes younger children to parks and local community groups. They are developing their self-confidence and social skills in preparation for starting nursery.
