This provision is good
Staff are very friendly and welcoming and promote a positive culture. Parents and carers comment on how at ease both they and their children feel in the playgroup. The manager carefully checks on children's progress. She makes good use of this information to identify how to use additional funding to close any gaps in their learning. She also ensures that assessment of children's progress is accurate and that staff identify relevant support to help them to move forward in their learning. The staff team make useful observations of children's learning. Staff also regularly discuss learning with parents and carers. They talk to them about how they can support their children's progress at home. Parents and carers regularly look at their children's learning journals and find the information very useful. Staff make good use of the space and resources to promote a safe and attractive environment. They provide children with an appropriate range of activities, while

ensuring there is plenty of space to move around freely.

It is not yet outstanding because:
Although managers evaluate staff practice and identify areas for improvement, they do not always clearly identify what support staff need to make changes or what impact they will have on children's learning and development. On occasion, staff do not give children sufficient time to think and respond to questions and discussions.

What the setting needs to do to improve further
To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

Inspection activities
The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and outdoors and assessed the impact this has on children's learning. The inspector completed a joint observation with the playgroup manager. The inspector held a meeting with the playgroup manager and the chair of the management committee. The inspector looked at relevant documentation, such as evidence of the suitability of staff working in the playgroup, as well as their qualifications and training. The inspector spoke to a selection of parents and carers during the inspection and took account of their views.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. Staff know about the different types of abuse. They are clear on what to do if they have any concerns about a child. Staff are well qualified and attend a good range of core training to continue to refresh their knowledge and skills. This helps the playgroup to meet the safeguarding and welfare requirements. Staff attend some additional training. They use what they learn to improve their provision. For example, following training, staff have provided more opportunities for young children to role play. This enables children to recreate their first experiences in their imaginative play and also provides them with links to home. Staff develop appropriate partnerships with other settings and agencies to help ensure children receive consistent support. They are proactive in working with other settings that children attend.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
Children enjoy a good variety of play opportunities during the session. Staff provide a good balance of adult-led and child-initiated play, including constant access to the outdoor area. Staff plan well so that resources are always set up for children to immediately start playing. Staff also give good consideration to resources within the different areas. A group of children thoroughly enjoy using the props and resources to recreate the story of the Three Little Pigs. Children join in enthusiastically with group activities. They listen to instructions, answer their name and show an interest in stories and songs. They demonstrate that they are learning the skills that they will need for school. Children enjoy using the physical play equipment outside. They challenge themselves to balance on the stepping stones or to use the pot stilts. Children have good levels of perseverance and a motivation to succeed. Staff give lots of praise and encourage children to share their
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
All children develop good attachments with staff in the setting. Staff consistently support their independence. For example, children follow the routine of finding their name, washing their hands, getting their own crockery and serving themselves at snack time. Staff give good levels of support as children start at the setting. They also offer stay-and- play sessions for parents and carers, so they can see what their children do. Parents and carers find this reassuring in terms of seeing how their child has settled. Children rarely misbehave and when they do staff are very calm and effective in dealing with this.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
The well-coordinated support for disabled children and those with special educational needs means that any gaps in their learning are closing. All children, including those in receipt of funding, make good progress in their learning and development.
