This provision is good

 The childminder works carefully with parents and other providers to successfully support progress for individuals. This ensures that children are able to focus on key areas of development in preparation for going to school.  The childminder has a good knowledge of children's individual needs. She uses this to identify their next steps of learning and plans activities that will interest and engage them. Consequently, all children are making good progress in their learning.  Parents are valued and are extremely well informed about children's progress. The childminder positively encourages them to contribute to children's learning and provides them with useful advice to support their children's development at home.  Children are confident and happy in the safe environment of the childminder's home. They have secure relationships with the childminder who is kind and nurturing towards them.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 Children do not always have enough opportunities to explore differences and uniqueness to help them develop a greater understanding of cultural diversity.  Although the childminder attends training to help her meet the needs of children, she does not always ensure that she is fully up to date with current government or childcare initiatives.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 provide more opportunities for children to explore differences and to respect and celebrate one another's uniqueness  strengthen the systems for professional development to keep well informed of current government and childcare initiatives.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector viewed areas of the house used for childminding.  The inspector spoke with the childminder and children at appropriate times throughout the inspection.  The inspector looked at a range of documentation, including policies, and children's learning and assessment documents.  The inspector spoke to and took account of the views of parents.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a secure knowledge of child protection and the actions to take to secure children's well-being. Overall, she is diligent in keeping her knowledge up to date. She monitors the work of her assistant well and informs them of all necessary information. The childminder works closely with parents and takes account of their wishes to further enhance her practice. Her key focus when reflecting on her provision is how she can help individual children to make further progress. As a result, she attends various training courses, which she uses effectively to improve her provision.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder has a secure understanding of how young children learn. She combines this well with her knowledge of individual children to provide a range of interesting activities. Children settle quickly as they arrive and confidently choose what they want to play with. The childminder plays with the children, introduces new language into their play and demonstrates new skills for them to learn. Children respond well to these techniques and are able to extend their skills and become ready for the next steps in their learning. For example, children practise their writing using different tools, they enjoy sharing stories and the younger ones particularly like singing songs. Close work with parents and other providers allows the childminder to provide consistent and individually tailored experiences for all children.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children learn to share the plentiful range of toys and to manage their feelings as they play well together. The childminder uses positive behaviour strategies learned at training. For example, older children have worked together to create 'happy rules'. The childminder uses them as a reminder of what is acceptable and what they have agreed. Children are confident and happy, and their individual needs are well met. The childminder knows each child very well and is constantly attuned to their needs. For example, she is quick to notice when a child needs the toilet, so reminds them to try. She correctly identifies when children become tired and changes the activity to a quiet story where they can climb on her lap and relax. The childminder promotes children's health, physical development and safety through a range of activities and discussions. For example, they visit the allotment and park on a regular basis, and enjoy a children's yoga group.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children of all ages are making good progress. Those whose starting points are below their typical range of development receive the support they require to close any gaps.
