p.1

This provision is good

 The childminder has a good understanding of children's individual needs and promotes their emotional and physical well-being effectively.  An effective partnership with parents, alongside the well-established two-way exchange of information, provides consistency for the children's care and development.  Children make good progress in their learning. The childminder knows children well and continually assesses and supports their development.  Children's communication and language is supported well by the childminder's positive interaction, which helps to build on their developing vocabularies.  The childminder is clear on her role to keep children safe. She has a secure understanding of child protection issues and what to do if she has a concern about a child.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not always make the best use of opportunities to encourage children to explore and experiment through the creative play activities.  Younger children do not always have enough opportunity to develop an understanding of the importance of good hygiene routines.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 provide greater opportunities for the children to explore and experiment independently through the play activities  review procedures to support younger children's understanding of healthy practices.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed activities and interaction between the childminder and the children, and reviewed the play equipment and resources.  The inspector spoke with the childminder at appropriate times throughout the inspection.  The inspector looked at documentation, including a sample of children's records.  The inspector viewed the areas of the premises used for childminding.  The inspector looked at the systems used by the childminder to evaluate her provision and comments from parents.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a good understanding of how to manage and minimise risks, without reducing opportunities for children's development. She reviews the play areas regularly. Recently she has put extra safety measures in place for younger children. The childminder has a positive attitude to the ongoing improvement of her provision. She regularly observes children in their play and has identified the need to update her systems to help her assess and monitor children's progress more effectively. The childminder plans a wide range of stimulating and interesting play experiences to help children move on in their development. She keeps parents well-informed about children's achievements, well-being and development, and this helps to provide continuity for the children.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder has a good knowledge of how child learn and develop. She provides the children with suitably challenging play experiences. Younger children engage in varied physical play experiences. For example, they are keen to explore and confidently pull themselves up and hold on to the push-along toys, reassured that the childminder is nearby. The childminder encourages children's language skills through relaxed conversations as they play. For instance, she echoes young children's attempts at speech and helps broaden their vocabulary as she talks about what they are doing. Children learn how to make things work. For example, they are fascinated to see the musical toys light up and hear the song. The childminder teaches children to press the buttons to create the sounds and children repeat the actions. Children gain confidence in the different environments and learn to socialise with others. For example, they attend activities

outside the childminder's home, such as rhyme time at the local library.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children demonstrate a strong sense of belonging. They are settled and content, interact well with the childminder and move around confidently. The childminder follows children's individual routines. She has a warm and caring manner and the children build trusting relationships with her. The childminder values all children and helps them to understand that they are important. She teaches children to listen to each other and to be accepting of others so they play together well. The childminder liaises with parents about young children's feeding requirements. She encourages the children to learn to feed themselves and makes sure they are supervised constantly to protect their safety and welfare.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress and develop the essential skills they need for the future. This means they are well prepared for the next steps in their learning, and their move on to school.
