This provision is good

 Partnerships with parents are strong. The childminder completes diaries for the children and shares regular summaries of children's progress. These help to keep parents informed of their children's learning.  Children form close relationships with the childminder. Her friendly and affectionate approach helps children to feel safe and promotes their emotional well-being.  Parents report that children have, 'Great fun with the childminder' and they are, 'Developing well in a warm and encouraging environment'.  The childminder gives consistent messages to reinforce positive behaviour. She reminds children to use their manners and to show kindness towards others.  The childminder manages her setting well. She has a secure understanding of how to teach children, assess their skills and help them make good progress in their learning.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not consider how children of different ages can be fully involved when taking part in group activities together.  The childminder does not gain enough information about children's skills on entry to help her plan precisely for their learning from the outset.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 strengthen ways to support children's learning during group activities that help all children to be actively involved  gain more detailed information about what children can already do when they join the setting.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector completed a joint observation with the childminder.  The inspector looked at relevant documentation, such as the childminder's self- evaluation and evidence of the suitability of adults living on the premises.  The inspector took account of written comments from parents.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The childminder successfully promotes children's care and learning. She has a good understanding of the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage. All required records and policies that promote children's safety and welfare are well maintained. The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder accesses training to make sure her knowledge of safeguarding is up to date. She has comprehensive information about child protection procedures, which enables her to respond appropriately to any concerns about the children. The childminder makes good use of a local online learning network to keep informed of current issues. She uses self-evaluation well to reflect on her practice and think about areas to improve.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder demonstrates good teaching skills. She actively joins in with the children's play and provides a broad range of activities to promote their learning. She accurately assesses children's ongoing development and keeps a close check on their progress. Children are members of the local library and regularly borrow books, which helps to promote their interest in reading. They enjoy attending the weekly playgroup where they mix with other children and develop their social skills. Babies are curious and explore their surroundings with interest. They learn to develop their physical skills, for example, by using the furniture or the push-along toys to help them balance. Older children become engrossed in baking activities that offer plenty of learning opportunities, such as counting, mixing ingredients and using small tools to create shapes.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder builds close relationships with the children. She interacts warmly with them to help them feel safe and secure. The childminder implements good hygiene standards. She follows hygienic routines, such as when changing nappies or preparing the table for snack. This helps to minimise any risks to children's health. The childminder makes sure children have regular opportunities to be active, for example, when they visit the local country park. She enjoys providing art and craft activities for the children, which means they have good opportunities to be creative. Children learn to be independent, for example, when they access the upstairs bathroom and the childminder ensures their safety when they use the stairs. Children play harmoniously together and the childminder offers praise to build their confidence.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are happy and settled in the childminder's care. They reach expected levels of development typical for their age, given their starting points. Children are well supported to gain the key skills required for their future learning, including school.
