This provision is good

 The childminder uses her good knowledge of children and information from her observations and assessments to plan a good range of challenging activities that skilfully support children's interests and next steps in learning. This contributes to all children making consistently good progress in their learning and development.  The childminder promotes children's communication and language development very well. Her good use of questions to promote thinking, and encouragement for children to continually reflect on their own experiences helps children to become good communicators.  The dedicated childminder uses her good knowledge of children to help ensure that she is responsive to their every need. The encouragement, support and reassurance she offers to children help them to develop the confidence to form good friendships, make new relationships and adapt their behaviour to different social situations.

p.1

This provision is good

 The childminder has a wealth of experience and knowledge. Her constant research, occasional training and meetings with other local childminders to share good practice ideas help her to enhance her knowledge and skills. She actively applies her learning in practice to help raise the quality of care and learning for children.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 Assessments of children's learning do not always consistently and clearly highlight children's next steps to further support parents in extending learning at home.  The childminder does not provide enough opportunities for children to investigate for themselves why things happen and how things work.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 make better use of children's assessments to more clearly and consistently highlight children's next steps, in order to continuously support parents in extending their children's learning at home  provide more opportunities for children to independently investigate why things happen and how things work during their play.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector toured the areas used for childminding.  The inspector observed children during their freely chosen activities.  The inspector held discussions with the childminder and children throughout the inspection.  The inspector examined a range of documents. These included evidence of suitability checks, a record of the childminder's training, the policies and procedures, self- evaluation documents and children's observation and assessment records.  The inspector conducted a joint observation with the childminder during a planned activity.  The inspector took account of the views of parents, using comments noted on electronic feedback from them.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder has a good knowledge of the procedures to take to protect a child's welfare. The childminder shows a high regard for the safety of the children in her care. Effective supervision, secure areas and the childminder's good knowledge of first aid contribute to ensuring that children remain safe at all times. The childminder monitors children's progress well. She accurately records children's achievements and uses her good knowledge of how children learn, together with relevant documents, to make informed decisions about their next steps in learning. Self-evaluation strongly values the contributions from parents and children and is clearly focused on improving practice and provision. Partnerships with parents are good. The childminder uses generally effective methods of communication to keep parents informed of their children's learning and progress.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The quality of teaching is good. The childminder provides innovative experiences for children to engage in to support their excitement of upcoming events. Children have fun developing their imagination skills when using a good range of role-play resources that they have helped to create, such as Santa's sleigh. They actively imitate what they have seen before and confidently sing along to familiar songs playing in the background. Children are helped to develop good physical skills when dressing up and when throwing and catching snowballs. They are confident to extend their own play and take a leading role when playing games, such as hide and seek. Children actively count beyond 10, demonstrating their good awareness of numbers and counting. The childminder promotes early friendships. Children respect one anothers' space and happily await their turn when playing games with other children. Children are inspired by the good examples that the

childminder provides when using a range of textured materials to create a desired effect.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder forms good relationships with the children. Gradual settling-in sessions and continual reassurance from the childminder during initial visits help to nurture children's emotional well-being so that they are happy, settled and assured as parents leave. Children enjoy completing tasks for themselves. For example, they actively attend to their own toileting needs and confidently peel their own fruit for snack. This contributes to children developing good independence skills. The childminder places a high regard on children's safety and remains vigilant when on outings in the local community. She uses effective methods to teach children about how to keep themselves safe, such as when crossing the road. The childminder provides a wide range of healthy foods for children to eat and takes children for walks in the local area each day to promote their good health.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make consistently good progress in their learning from their starting points. They are motivated to learn and sustain their interest in the wide range of challenging and fun experiences that the childminder provides to build upon their prior learning. This helps all children to develop the skills they need for their next stages in learning.
