p.1
This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:
The childminder knows the signs that would give her concern for children's welfare and safety. However, since moving house, she has not secured her knowledge about who to contact should a concern arise about a child's well-being. The childminder does not use self-evaluation effectively to improve her practice. She is not fully aware of the learning and development requirements, including the need to share with parents a written summary of children's progress when they are two years old. She has not consistently developed her practice, including developing her knowledge and skills of how children learn and develop. Although children make some progress in their learning, the childminder does not always make effective use of the assessments of children's development to plan challenge in their play. She does not always clearly explain to parents how their children are progressing, so that they can support their learning at home.
p.1
This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:
The childminder does not always help children understand the differences between people in the world around them.
p.1
It has the following strengths
Children enjoy spending time with the childminder who is caring and understands how to meet their individual welfare needs. The childminder takes appropriate steps to reduce hazards in the environment and help children understand how to manage some risks for themselves.
p.1
What the setting needs to do to improve further
To meet the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage the provider must:
p.2
Due Date
improve understanding of the contact arrangements for the Local Safeguarding Children's Board to be able to respond appropriately to concerns for children's safety or welfare 01/01/2016
p.2
Due Date
improve understanding of the learning and development requirements, particularly in relation to assessment and the required progress check for children at age two years. 01/01/2016
p.2
Due Date
To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:
p.2
Due Date
strengthen arrangements for evaluation of practice to clearly identify areas for improvement strengthen professional development to keep skills and knowledge of requirements up to date develop further partnerships with all parents to fully engage them with their children's learning promote children's awareness of people and communities in the world, especially those beyond their own experiences.
p.2
Inspection activities
The inspector observed children's daily play activities. The inspector spoke with the childminder at appropriate times throughout the inspection. The inspector took account of the written views of parents. The inspector conducted a joint observation with the childminder. The inspector viewed a range of documentation, including policies and procedures, and children's records.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management requires improvement
The childminder does not have a consistent approach to evaluating her setting. She is not proactive in keeping up to date with changes to requirements, which has an impact on her understanding of some of her responsibilities. The childminder does not ask parents to share their opinions of her service, or use their point of view to reflect on how well she manages her setting. However, she communicates well with parents to understand children's personal needs. For example, she tells parents about their children's day when they collect them in the evening. The childminder has sound arrangements to share information with other settings children may attend. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder knows what to do if she is concerned for children's safety or welfare. She has a written policy, although she has not updated this with relevant contact details.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement
Children make some progress in their learning; however, arrangements to monitor and assess their development are not consistent because the childminder is not fully aware of the learning and development requirements. Parents are aware of their children's daily experiences but do not always receive precise information about the progress they are making. For example, the childminder is not aware of the need to give parents a written summary of children's learning when they are two years old. The childminder has a sound understanding of child development and provides children with toys and resources to help them learn. She does not make every effort to help children understand the differences between themselves or develop a good understanding of the world. For example, there are few opportunities for children to learn about people and cultures beyond their own.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement
Children show they feel safe and secure in the childminder's care. However, she does not make effective use of the sound relationships she has created to help them make good progress in their learning. Children receive fresh air, exercise and a balanced diet, and learn to feed themselves. For example, very young children learn to drink from their own beakers and eat a range of fruit at snack time. The childminder uses a range of strategies to help children become independent and manage their own risks. For example, they learn to take turns and how to climb on and off a ride-on car by themselves. The childminder gives clear expectations for behaviour and encourages children to play together.
p.3
Outcomes for children require improvement
The childminder has inconsistent arrangements to monitor children's development, which has an impact on the support children receive to make consistently good progress. They develop some of the skills they need for the next step of learning, such as going to school.
