This provision is good

 The childminder provides children with a range of activities and resources to interest and motivate them. Children make good progress in their learning in relation to their starting points.  Children have good relationships with the childminder, who forms secure emotional attachments with them. Children are very settled and display high levels of well-being.  The childminder works closely with parents and shares their children's progress with them. This helps parents support their children's learning at home.  The childminder carries out regular and thorough risk assessments and involves the children in managing their own safety. For example, they practise emergency evacuations and follow good hygiene practices.  Children learn about the importance of healthy lifestyles. For example, the childminder involves them in the preparation of nutritious snacks and they have opportunities for fresh air and exercise.

p.1

This provision is good

 The childminder involves parents and children in her ongoing self-evaluation. This helps her reflect on the strengths and weaknesses, and identify improvements to continue to provide good quality care.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not always build on children's independent ability to make choices and fully develop their own interests.  At times, the childminder does not provide opportunities for children to make marks and practise their early writing skills during their play.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 enable children to build on their independence and fully develop their interests  increase opportunities for children to develop their early writing skills.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the childminder interacting and playing with the children.  The inspector looked at a sample of paperwork, including children's progress records, and policies and procedures.  The inspector held a meeting with the childminder.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The childminder keeps up to date with her knowledge. For example, she attended training to improve her observations and assessments of children's progress, and updated her policies and procedures. The childminder regularly develops her practices, for example, she meets with other childminders to share good ideas and does her own research. This helps promote positive outcomes for children and their families. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a clear understanding of the procedure to follow if she has concerns about a child's welfare in order to keep them safe. The childminder carefully monitors children's progress to identify next steps in their learning and provide further challenging activities that extend their learning.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder has a good understanding of how children learn. She promotes communication and language very effectively. Children have many opportunities to learn new words and extend their sentences through their interactions with the childminder. For example, they learn the names of dinosaurs and join in conversations during imaginative play with the toy railway. The childminder involves the children as they find out about different customs and celebrations to strengthen their understanding of the wider world. Children are happy and confident as they develop their physical skills. For example, they enjoy using the trampoline and a variety of construction materials.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder knows the children and their families well. She is patient, calm and a good role model. For example, the childminder praises children as they help her during the day, and children learn to share and take turns. She teaches children the boundaries of the setting. Children behave well and respect each other. The childminder talks to them about special occasions, such as birthdays. She involves them in making decisions, for instance, when they visit the shops. This helps to promote children's self-esteem effectively. The childminder builds positive relationships with other settings that children attend to promote consistency of care and learning.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

All children make good progress in relation to their starting points. They learn how to count and begin to recognise the written word. This helps prepare them for their move on to nursery and school.
